Additional Information

Initiated in 1855 by King Maximilian II of Bavaria, the Bavarian National Museum’s inception was based on the designs unearthed by Archive Director Karl Maria Freiherr von Aretin in 1853 for the original Wittelsbach Museum.

The intention went beyond creating a mere museum, the aim was to gather the most captivating and patriotic symbols and other historical relics from bygone eras.

King Maximillian II, who always had a passion for teaching instead of ruling kickstarted the museum.

The project was revived by Prince Luitpold in 1899, whose influences can still be seen all around. Come along for this enlightening journey.
