- Elephanta Caves - Begin the day with a morning pickup from your hotel, airport, or cruise port, and travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle to the Gateway of India and harbor. From there, take a ferry to Elephanta Island, home to the World Heritage-listed Elephanta Caves. These ancient cave temples, dating back to the fifth century, are adorned with exquisite reliefs and statues dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
- Gateway of India - Return to the city to visit the Gateway of India, a striking basalt arch symbolizing colonial triumph, facing Mumbai Harbour. It was constructed to commemorate King George V’s royal visit in 1911, though it wasn’t completed until 1924. Interestingly, the British used this gateway just 24 years later to parade the last British regiment as India moved towards independence.
Later, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense).
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus - Admire the UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic masterpiece of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST). This grand, bustling train station is the city’s most lavish Gothic structure and a symbol of colonial-era India.
- Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market - Formerly known as Crawford Market, it is Mumbai’s largest market and retains the last traces of British Bombay before the central bazaars’ hustle begins. It primarily trades in fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish, and is also a popular spot for tourists to purchase spices.
- Hanging Gardens - Also called Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens, these terraced gardens are located atop Malabar Hill, opposite Kamala Nehru Park. They offer sunset views over the Arabian Sea and feature numerous animal-shaped hedges. (Note: Hanging Gardens is currently undergoing reconstruction and is closed to the public.)
- Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum - This small yet poignant museum is housed in the building where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Bombay from 1917 to 1934. Exhibits include his personal room, a photographic record of his life, dioramas, and documents, such as letters he wrote to Adolf Hitler and Franklin D. Roosevelt, along with tributes from Ho Chi Minh and Albert Einstein.
- Dhobi Ghat - This 140-year-old dhobi ghat is Mumbai’s largest human-powered laundry, where hundreds of people wash thousands of kilograms of clothes and linens daily in 1026 open-air troughs. The best view is from the bridge across the railway tracks near Mahalaxmi train station.
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya - Previously known as the Prince of Wales Museum, it was designed by George Wittet, who also designed the Gateway of India. Besides its stunning architecture, the museum houses artifacts from the Mughal empire and rare heirlooms from Europe, Nepal, Tibet, Japan, and China.
- Marine Drive - Stop for photos at Marine Drive, lined with aging art deco apartments. It’s one of Mumbai’s most popular promenades and sunset-watching spots. Its twinkling lights at night have earned it the nickname ‘the Queen’s Necklace’.
After exploring Mumbai’s most remarkable attractions, the tour concludes at the starting point or another preferred location in Mumbai.
