The Elephanta Caves are a series of intricately carved caves situated on Elephanta Island, also known as Gharapuri, in Mumbai Harbour. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these caves represent Mumbai’s oldest historical landmark and are among the top tourist attractions in the city.
Renowned for their exquisite Hindu temples and sculptures, the Elephanta Caves were named by the Portuguese after they discovered an elephant statue on the island. This statue is currently housed at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Jijamata Udyan, Byculla, Mumbai. The island features two clusters of caves, showcasing rock-cut architecture. Five of these caves, located on the island’s western hills, are dedicated to the Shaiva sect of Hinduism, with various Hindu sculptures meticulously carved within them.
