Mtskheta, located in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti province of Georgia, is one of the country’s oldest cities. It sits at the junction of the Kura and Aragvi rivers, roughly 20 kilometers north of the capital, Tbilisi. In this historic city, you’ll find the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, an example of Eastern Orthodox architecture.
Renowned for its Early Middle Ages design, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Svetitskhoveli is Georgia’s second-largest church, following the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Another significant site in Eastern Georgia is Uplistsikhe, or the “Lord’s Fortress“. This deserted town carved out of rock has been a significant piece of Georgian history. Established during the late Bronze Age, around 1000 BC, it remained populated until the 13th century AD.
