Highlights

Machame Gate To Machame Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - One hour’s drive from Moshi to Machame gate, where we complete park formalities, meet our crew of porters and start to climb! The first section of the route climbs steadily and passes through magnificent, dense rain forest.

This path is less well-trodden so it can get somewhat overgrown in places and it is often wet and muddy underfoot.

Additional Information

The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accommodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents.

The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest.

The route heads toward the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail.

“Kilimanjaro Trek Machame Route and 4-days Tanzania Safari” - I emailed Oscar the director of Exceed Expectations Tours & Safari for Kilimanjaro climbing & Safari quotes. He responded immediately with very detailed and reasonable priced quotes. I checked the reviews and contacted several climbers getting rave recommendations for Oscar and his company. I went ahead and booked Machame route where I was with 6 other climbers and from our experience the reviews do not do justice to his excellence. Our safety and health were top on their agenda. It was like being with people that you have known for a long time. Excellent food and drinks by the John kept us going. The porters worked so hard, rushing ahead to put up tents. Oscar taught us about Kilimanjaro, history, and Tanzania, also took our great shots. As for the 4-day safari, again not enough said about how great this experience was. We visited Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. Our guide was very knowledgeable when it came to the different game in the parks as well as finding the best spots to see animals. Heading into the national parks can be a headache for some as wait times can range from 10 minutes to an hour or so. However, we never spent a ton of time at each gate entrance, and our guide made sure to get through in a timely matter. As well, we wanted to get up early to see active game in the parks as this is the best time to see them, and our guide made sure of this as we headed out in the early morning hours where we had great luck in seeing all types of game. Overall it was an excellent trek with professionals. If you're having trouble finding a good climbing company, I highly recommend Exceed Expectations Tours & Safari!

Breathtaking at Barafu Camp, 7 Days Machame Route. - I was a solo travel from America and I join the group for 7 days Machame Route with Exceed Expectations Tours for a very reasonable and competitive price. Early I received a lot of offers from many Companies that I approached but I was more impressed by Exceed package and after a serious of questions and price negotiations I decided to join a group. On arrival I was picked by Exceed driver who was kind and funny at all time, he drove me to my hotel and a few hours later I mate Mr. Oscar and he was happy to answer some few questions I had for him. Later on I did join the other travel and together we get a briefing from our guides about everything we needed to know, followed by gears checkup and other formalities. Around 08:30 am we were hit the road to the Machame gate and my adventure were now real. First few days were cool and amazing and ten start to get harder, there was time I felt I could not go on anymore, afraid to then here were I learn the importance of a group than being by your own, the guides techniques and encouragements I received from other climber were definitely the only thing that keep me going at that time. Reach Stella point I felt like am done, no more I can’t feel my face neither my legs couldn’t take another step, too cold now and harder to catch my breath, And I see and hear our guides whisper just few kilometers and we will all be at the top. I remembered yelling myself at the top, was happy moreover grateful for our guides, this guy’s deserve a gold medal, I could see myself smile, taking pictures and videos. Story of my life in Africa and I wanted to share with you too.Amazing country, Crazy Mountain and best tour operator in Kilimanjaro. Thank you all and I can’t wait to plan another tour with this guys.

Hike Kili & Balloon Safari at Serengeti. Made Possible by Exceed Expectations Tours! - Go to Africa was always my dream and as much as I love to travel, Africa has opened my eyes and make me understood there is so much more the world can offer to us. The beauty of Kilimanjaro and magnificence of Serengeti national park in Norther Tanzania blow my mind away. Well for all 7 days we climbed kili through the best forest we could hope for, Oscar suggest a two options and I choose Machame, because I wanted to hike high and sleep low and get the best view of the mountain at all time. Passing and seeing other climbers, pushing up every day, drink enough water to deal with altitude sickness were a routine for all days. I made it to Barafu Camp, the highest place you could ever be in Africa and I was having tears of joy. The next day after descending from Mt. Kili I was ready to visit and tour the magnificent Serengeti Park, I also arranged the balloon ride so that I get the best view of Serengeti. It was glorious to flew over the plains of Serengeti and it’s was first for me to see cheetah from balloon. Cross the Seronera River, then to a short grass of Ndutu were a magical spectacle of wildebeest and Zebra from a balloon service. Balloon service is beautiful, Exceed Tours service is beyond greatness and I recommend this local company to anyone out there.

Made it to the Roof of Africa! 5895m (19,342ft). - We arrived at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest point in the content of Africa in the early hours of 22th, September after an exhausting climb through the night. Left Barafu base camp (4,673) at 2:00 am after not being able to sleep and already climbing many hours that day. I had zero left in time after reaching Stella point… every 3 steps on the summit ridge I battled to stay awake and upright… was literally falling into a sleep every 30 seconds…. Admittedly probably went too fast! The altitude was affecting me way more than it had before. Felt like my mind wasn’t connected to my body. I didn’t have energy left to even take off gloves or say anything at the summit before descending rapidly to more oxygen rich air. What an experience though! Seeing the sunrise on the approach to Stella point was a crazy weird emotional feeling. Tears were shed! Loved every minute of the trip. Kilimanjaro is a stunning place, camping on the mountain every night was so great and amazing. Got to share the experience with an amazing team and couldn’t have done it without the support of the guide / porters… Thanks to everyone who participate to make this dream come true to us, thanks Exceed Expectations Tours for your generosity and a well-planned and prepared adventure.

The Machame Route 6 Nights at Kilimanjaro Mountain with Exceed Expectations Tours.... - Many people ask me about my trip to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania so I decided to describe a little bit here, and share some photos with you. The whole trekking lasted for 7 days we walked the road Machame Route (whiskey) in total we did over 60km. 1 day we are moving from Machame Gate 1800m to the first camp Machame Camp 2835m. At the gate we leave our big backpacks, where the pottery weigh them and share all the kitting they wear (often on their head) to each of the camps we eat dinner and go… feels excited, can’t wait, until we move, I don’t know what to expect. I’m going to get a little bit physically we walked very slowly, I knew it was necessary the road was constantly through the tropical forest, wonderful views. Around 18:00 we were already, our tents are waiting spread and in one bigger tent where our meals waited I know understand it worth it, the beautiful weather I start to realize that I’m in Tanzania and I fulfill one of my dreams. The night was beautiful and cold, in the sky you can see plenty of stars was amazing feeling and we will forever remember those days with the only one company that I can recommend to everyone who wish to summit Kilimanjaro in the future.
