Additional Information

This is a walking tour with a difference, guided by Captain Bryan. It’s not the typical ‘sit and listen’ type of tour, where the guide doesn’t bother to know your name. Instead, after a quick introduction, Captain Bryan will guide you through the historical rise of Shem Creek and its renowned shrimping fleet, amongst other things. This tour provides a unique opportunity to witness the industry in action. If luck strikes, you might even meet Mr. Rector at Geechie Seafood, surrounded by his numerous shrimp boats, a glorious symbol of the abundant catch waiting out in the ocean. This isn’t just a tour; it is an opportunity to truly engage with the culture of Shem Creek. Guests go home with a slice of history, cultural insights, local lingo, delicious snacks, and above all, a newfound respect for our local shrimp harvesters and the historical significance of their ceaseless efforts.

  • Walking distance is around 1.5 miles. Please note especially with summer heat that guests should be able to walk this distance.

Much More Than I Paid For! - I learned so much of the back-story of the Charleston that added so much to what seemed a simple "shrimping" story. I have a much better understanding the area and its struggles from the 1700s. Plus, his story telling skills made the entire tour ejoyable.

We enjoyed the tour and learned a lot. - Captain Brian did a great job of explaining the history of Shem Creek since the colonization period to the present. His tour included visits to prominent places near Shem Creek that were important in this country's history. His explanation of the rise and decline of the shrimping industry in the area was very easy to follow and informative. Thank you Captain Brian for the great tour!

Very enjoyable tour! - Captain Bryan is a great guide! He’s very knowledgeable about the history of Charleston and especially Mt. Pleasant. We not only learned about the shrimping industry but also about Charleston during the Civil War as well as pirates. This is a very interesting tour.

One of the greatest tours in Charleston with a guide who knows what he’s doing. - We had a very enlightening experience with Captain Bryan! Me and my family felt like we understood every that led up to the shrimping industry thanks to his concise and info-loaded explanations. Even though we’ve been almost everywhere in Charleston, this tour felt like a fresh experience (just like the shrimp). We also got to have conversations about the importance of shrimp conservation and the challenges facing the local shrimping community. I would suggest this tour even for those not too fond of seafood, as this feels like a very under appreciated industry. This is also great for those with limited time in Charleston, since Captain Bryan gives a lot of general history about the area.

So fascinating— truly unique - We took this tour a month ago but I’m still thinking about it. Truly a unique blend of history and local culture. We would have never known anything about shrimping or the local fisheries. Very local and very fun. This guide truly loves his city and his job.

Captain Brian delivers! - Although not advertised as such, this is really a two-for-one tour: not only do you get a close-up look at the shrimp industry, you also learn the fascinating connections between Charleston's history and the history of this industry. Captain Brian delivers it all!

Fun & Informational Tour - Highly Recommend - Fun & Highly informational tour! If in the area, definitely book it early in your trip. Family of 6 -- we learned so many interesting facts about shrimping and the Shem Creek area. Bryan was extremely friendly, knowledgeable & prepared (even brought water for us in July!) I loved that the kids (ages 17 14 13 and 11) felt comfortable asking Bryan questions and he had excellent answers. The biggest highlights were throwing the shrimp net & seeing the Outer Banks filming locations :-)
