- Coastal Expeditions on Shem Creek - Once you check in at Coastal Expeditions, your guides will prepare your group for the adventure by fitting your gear and offering a brief safety and instruction on how to sea kayak. Once we’re on the water, we’ll take a minute to get our “sea legs” before we paddle down towards the historic portion of Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor. We will return to this point at the end of the tour.

Discover the charm of Charleston’s renowned creek through a sea kayak journey. Witness indigenous creatures and gain knowledge about the area’s history along the way. As we navigate around the oyster-encrusted marshlands and past the shrimp vessels, we’ll observe creatures such as bottlenose dolphins, pelicans, egrets and others. During the summer, manatees and sea turtles also inhabit this creek. The experienced guides from Coastal Expeditions spearhead this voyage, ensuring a secure and enjoyable adventure for participants of every age.

Coastal Expeditions is located at the end of Mill Street on the left. Parking is available in the private lot. If the lot is full, public parking is available on Mill or Scott Streets. Check in upstairs in the Coastal Expeditions office.

Close to nature. - We took a morning tour and saw Charleston Bay and a bit of Shem Creek by kayak. Chance and Logan did a nice prep, enough for the newbies but not too much for those with experience. Very mellow paddling. Lots of bird activity and some dolphins feeding nearby.

Awesome experience! - We had a great time on our kayak safari! We had a very knowledgeable guide who told us about all the wildlife we saw as we went. The staff were all very friendly and helpful! Would definitely recommend a kayak safari it was a unique experience and was one of our favorite parts of our trip.

Our kids complained we only did the two hour not three hour - This expedition was amazing. They do not just throw you in a kayak and say go. You learn about the boat (which is nice with foot pedals) and get a quick kayak lesson and feel very comfortable when you get in. We had tandems with our kids 7 and 10. Our guide Jackie was AMAZING. She was very informative about the area and wildlife and did her best to try to find dolphins for our kids even if we only got a quick glimpse. She also did a nice job dealing with the fact that some of the other kayakers were very slow. Can’t recommend this experience highly enough.

Exploring Shem Creek - We had a great experience exploring Shem Creek!! It was my first time kayaking. Chase was very calm and so knowledgeable about the ecology and wild life. It was really beautiful.

High recommend 2 hour Shem Creek Safari Kayak Tour - Great experience! Wes and Logan were on top of everything! They situated us in the proper size kayak and Wes gave great paddling instructions. We would have loved to have seen more dolphins, (there was one dolphin surfacing about in the bay area before headed out) but alas we were not to be so fortunate to see more. We experienced other wild life. Jelly fish, Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Pelicans, Mallards, Cormorants, and a Mullet fish jumping out of the water! Wes and Logan were very knowledgable and enthusiastic about sharing there love of the environment. Two hours was just enough for us. We would highly recommend this tour.
