• Waimangu Volcanic Valley - Leaving Tauranga you head south through rolling farmland and forestry, past Lake Rotorua and on to the magical Waimangu Valley where your guide will take you through the world’s youngest geothermal valley. Starting at the head of the valley you will wind your way down a 4 kilometer pathway, passing a range of geothermal activity, hot springs, volcanic craters, nature and wildlife. Some highlights to look out for include the world’s largest hot spring, and the brilliant blue Inferno Crater.
• Lake Rotoma - The trails ultimately lead you down to the lake, where you’ll enjoy a relaxing 45 minute cruise around the tranquil waters of Lake Rotomahana. Throughout the cruise, you’ll encounter stunning geothermal activity only accessible by boat, as well as rare native birdlife, and stunning views across the lake at the imposing Mount Tarawera. You can also listen to the onboard commentary of the historic stories of the lake, and hear about the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption that covered and destroyed the pink and white terraces.

After a short bus ride back up the valley there is time to shop and grab a bite to eat before heading back to Tauranga.

From Tauranga, we’ll be heading south across farmlands and woodland areas, passing by the scenic Lake Rotorua and eventually reaching the enchanting Waimangu Valley. This is the newest geothermal valley in the world, and your tour guide will be there to show you around. Starting at the top, you’ll walk 4 kilometers down the valley, coming across a variety of geothermal features, including hot springs, volcanic craters, and indigenous wildlife. Key sights to keep an eye out for are the world’s biggest hot spring and the stunningly blue Inferno Crater.

Ultimately, the path takes you to the lake where you’ll be cruising for a relaxing 45 minutes along the peaceful Lake Rotomahana. On your cruise, you get to see the lake’s breathtaking geothermal features, only visible from a boat, and you might even spot some rare native birds. You’ll also enjoy beautiful views of the formidable Mount Tarawera across the lake. The on-board narration provides historic narratives of the lake area, retelling the story of the catastrophic 1886 Mount Tarawera volcanic eruption that decimated the pink and white terraces.
