This includes the formation of the landscape, the arrival of humans, the city’s founding, the variety of produce cultivated in the region, and insights into contemporary life. Starting from the port gates, the journey passes through Mount Maunganui township, by Mauao, the iconic mountain landmark, and “The Mount Main Beach,” a renowned New Zealand beach famous for surfing, professional beach volleyball, and surf lifesaving events. Crossing the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, the tour continues through the Port of Tauranga, highlighting how industry has transformed Tauranga into New Zealand’s busiest port, while offering breathtaking views of the harbour and Matakana Island.
- Tauranga - The tour proceeds to The Elms mission station, showcasing some of New Zealand’s oldest European settlement buildings, providing insight into how Europeans established themselves in the Bay of Plenty and began trading with local tribes. At Monmouth Redoubt, visitors will see evidence of the British army’s presence and learn about the Musket Wars, the New Zealand Land Wars, and the significance of the Battle of Gate Pa. The journey continues through the city center, past the Clarence Hotel, the site of Tauranga’s first regional government buildings, revealing how the site was utilized by the local mission, the British army, and local government.
- Otūmoetai - The tour then heads to Matua, to the remnants of the Otumoetai Pa site, offering stunning views across the harbour from what early Europeans considered the capital of Tauranga. Visitors will learn more about the Musket Wars, the peace that followed the conflicts, and how Tauranga’s harbour has evolved into the country’s busiest port.

Awesome Tauronga Tour. - We had a very friendly greeting from our tour guide Russell. He had an extensive knowledge of the area and it's history. Extremely informative. We travelled in a clean and comfortable mini van with Russell giving commentary whilst driving. Great experience.

Great short tour! - Great 2 hr tour. Only had 5 of us in 10 pax van. So was very small group tour. We saw a lot in only a couple of hours in the afternoon. Easy to find and convenient getting off ship.

Fantastic - Today we had the most amazing tour with Jude, our informative and very capable coach driver. I was lucky to sit in front seat and enjoy all the banter and great views of Tauranga

Very nice personal tour :) - February 20 2024.
Russel pick us up at the cruise ship, then we traveled in MT Maunganui valley in a very comfortable minibus.
Love the legend of Mt Maunganui! Very beautiful.
Russel is friendly, very knowledgeable about the area. We learned a lot.

Great little tour if you do not have a lot of time. - Small intimate group which gave us plenty of time to look at places of interest Knowledgeable and friendly guide. Enjoyed our tour immensely.

A must do while you're in town - This trip is well worth it, especially if you want to quickly learn more about the history of NZ. We've tried a few other cultural experiences here but they felt impersonal and weren't as fun or knowledgeable.
Since it's a small tour we got to ask a bunch of questions, and Russ knows his stuff. He's also great to have a laugh with & I recommend asking for him when you book.
We went with a family group including parents, grandparents, Aunts etc. but it'd be perfect whoever you're with.

Good guided tour of Tauranga. - Comfortable small group tour visiting various points of interest in Tauranga. Very knowledgeable guide (Russell). I found quite a few of the locations very interesting and scenic. Traffic was a bit heavy but that was unavoidable at this time of day.
