Best climbing experience ever - Tanzania is an amazing country with amazing destinations. The people are beautiful and kind. I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and toured Tarangire and Arusha National parks. Great wildlife with the big 5 and beautigul landscapes. Much less crowded than Kenya. Please don't hesitate to go and enjoy all they have to offer.

With Burigi Chato Safaris as we made it. - The decision to go up the roof of Africa was inspired by the logical question on how far we can push ourselves. The trip was through Machame route we chose was six days because it was shorter and can even add up to the challenge we gave ourselves. The Kilimanjaro route was very scenery and there was no many tourists. There were only four other groups. As we were told during high seasons there are many people. We are not the usual trekkers and with limited experience but we made it to the top thanks to our guides and the entire crew from Burigi Chato Safaris as we made it.

Perfect for the less experienced hiker - The Northern Circuit provided us ample time to adjust to the altitude, significantly decreasing chances of altitude sickness! Our group was comprised of couples aged 26 to 60 years of age. Some of the individuals were experienced hikers and adventurers, while others had never hiked higher than 5,000 ft prior to training. This route takes the long way around the mountain over 7 days. The summit was overnight between day 7 and 8, and then the remainder of days 8 and 9 are spent hiking back down the mountain. We enjoyed getting the see more of the mountainside, and while the terrain was still a tough hike in parts, this was much more doable than some of the shorter routes that are a steep incline the majority of your hike. I highly recommend taking the Northern Circuit! If you want to do fewer days, I would recommend taking a route with no fewer than 7 days. You will appreciate the time to acclimate and avoid extreme exhaustion and altitude sickness.

The Long and Winding Road - I summited Uhuru 6:24 AM. The sun had just risen over the horizon painting the whole landscape golden. I was so tired but still would say it was worth all the kilometers, all the steps up and down. Yet I didn't find catharsis from the summit, but instead started to wonder what, if anything, I came looking for in the first place. Kilimanjaro is not about summit, but it's not just about the journey either. It's about challenging yourself when you feel like giving up. To ensure you are not too easily tempted by your mind or your body, better to choose a longer, less travelled route like Northern Circuit. More time to adjust, more time to rest. Sometimes if feels you are wasting time with shorter days, but after awhile you learn to appreciate the idle time spend with your travelling companions, and yourself. If you have time, take a longer route, enjoy the peace and quiet and worry less about the summit. It's still there when it's your time to eat the last piece of the elephant.
