Machame Gate (1490m)

Machame - Hiking time: 7 hours

Distance: Approximately 18 kilometres

Habitat: Montane forest

After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from Moshi or Arusha and driven to the Machame Village. In the village, you can buy mineral water and will receive a packed lunch. From the village, depending on the road conditions, you will either continue driving 3 kilometres or walk to the Machame Gate (1490m). At the gate, the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). You will then begin your ascent into the rainforest. During this section of the hike, you should expect rain, mud, and fog. Also, be on the lookout for wildlife, including Colobus monkeys! About halfway up the trail, you will have a lunch break and you will reach the Machame Camp (2980) in the late afternoon or early evening. The porters and chef, who move very fast up the mountain, will reach camp before you and set up your tents, boil drinking water, and prepare snacks for your arrival. After washing up, a hot dinner will be served. For overnight, mountain temperatures may drop to freezing so be prepared!

Additional Information

Machame is one of our top choices for many reasons. To begin with, it boasts one of the highest success ratios - a staggering 90% for those embarking on a 7-day adventure. Additionally, it provides excellent acclimatisation, enabling you to follow the mantra of ‘walk high, sleep low’ each day. Fantastic views that alter with each ascending day, along with the thrill of conquering the formidable Great Barranco Wall. Should your primary objective be to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, the Machame route is your best bet.

Despite its high success ratio and captivating attractions, the Machame route is undeniably the mountain’s most congested. To alleviate this, we ensure our groups start their journey early, thus bypassing the majority of the crowd. Moreover, we dispatch a portion of our porter squad ahead of you, enabling them to secure an optimal spot at the campsites ahead of time. This also ensures that by the time you arrive, your tent is set up and refreshing hot beverages and snacks are prepared for you.

I will forever remember this team!! - "What can I say. This was the most amazing trip of my lifetime. Everything about it was truly exceptional. From the pre-trip organisation and advice, to the safety and care from the whole team in Moshi. The team of guides led admirably by Justin, Innocent, Kabu were amazing. Safety always came first but their support and determination to get everyone to the top and back again was astounding. The quality of the food from Kareem the chef was excellent and ensured we all had the right diet to provide the energy needed. Particular mention should also made of the large support team of porters, cooks, tent erectors, and even the toilet attendant. Without all of this, ascending Kilimanjaro would not have been possible. Thank you so much. You were all amazing!

I've Just got back from doing Kilimanjaro - I’ve just got back from doing Kilimanjaro, the 7 day Machame Route. I’ve had an amazing, unforgettable time, thanks to the wonderful Pinnacle Team. The team from Pinnacle which included the guides and the porters were absolutely fantastic. The expertise of Robert, our lead guide made us feel very safe and secure as we put our lives into his hands. Robert’s commitment to his enormous responsibility throughout the week was very evident as he looked after us and his team. I was massively impressed how well organised the whole trek was making sure all our needs were met where possible. Throughout the week it felt like nothing was too much trouble. The guides were fun, patient, caring and generous with their time. The porters worked so hard and were so conscientiousness in the roles that they were doing to make sure everything was right for us. In my opinion the guides and porters went above and beyond what I would have expected from them and the whole experience with them was very humbling. 🙏 I would wholeheartedly recommend to do this trip with pinnacle. I should also add that when booking the trip the customer service that I received from Sammy and other members of staff was excellent. Again, nothing seemed like too much trouble. After booking the trip I phoned on several occasions to ask questions and talk a few things through and the staff were always happy to spend time on the phone. When planning my next adventure I’ll definitely be coming to pinnacle.

Such an Amazing Team - My two cousins and I did Kilimanjaro with Pinnacle Adventures and Safaris, our team was simply the best. We had beyond what we expected. From meals on the mountain, the care our guides showed us, they frequently checked on us to see if the oxygen level was perfect especially before the summit. Words won't be enough to express our gratitude to the porters who worked really hard to make sure our triple was memorable. I highly recommend Pinnacle Adventures for Mount Kilimanjaro and Safaris. We also had a chance to a day trip in Tarangire, perfectly organized by Pinnacle. We shall definitely come back for more.

Choose Pinnacle team for Kili - This was my second time climbing Kibo Peak, and I feel blessed that I chose Pinnacle for this experience. We chose a seven-day trek and went via Machame up to the summit and down via Marangu, which I have since found out is not an easy thing to arrange with the park authorities. The leaders of our climb (Jonas, Manase, and Seif) paid attention to every detail - lodging, tents, food, etc. - so we could focus on our adventure and develop memories that will last a lifetime. You could really sense our guides' joy in being a part of these expeditions, and I must say their enthusiasm was infectious. I felt like we mattered to them and were more than clients, but were friends as well. This is not just a job for the Pinnacle staff. This is their passion. These guys rock!!!

MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME - Have been home for 1 year and 7 months now and can't stop thinking about my Kilimanjaro trip! Pinnacle Adventures were amazing from start to finish - Joan and Frazier were both fantastic and extremely helpful. Our main guide, Abraham was really great and motivated us to keep on going on summit night when we felt like giving up, and Meshack and Peter were amazing too. All were really knowledgeable and were able to provide us with all the information about Kilimanjaro and its history we could wish for, and kept us informed as to the names of the various flora and fauna we encountered on our journey to the summit.  The food on the trip was absolutely incredible and far exceeded all of our expectations! Rama was truly a magician - how he managed to make the meals he made halfway up a mountain I have no idea. Colman kept us entertained and amused at all times and Richard was always there at the end of a hike to take our bags from us and put them in our tents. There were 5 of us in our group and all 5 made it to the top! Climbing Kilimanjaro is one of the hardest things I've ever done but I enjoyed every minute of it. I would definitely like to do another trip like this again and would not hesitate to use Pinnacle Adventures & Safaris Ltd. Thank you for creating amazing memories which will last a lifetime! Lukas
