Ascending Dreams: My Journey on Kilimanjaro’s Lemosho Route
Drawn by the call of Africa’s highest peak, I embarked on the Lemosho Route of Kilimanjaro, a journey through diverse landscapes and pristine wildlife. Join me as I recount this unforgettable adventure.
The Call of Kilimanjaro
As a wildlife photographer with a deep-seated love for Africa, the allure of Mount Kilimanjaro had always been a whisper in my ear, beckoning me to its majestic heights. The Lemosho Route, known for its scenic beauty and less crowded paths, seemed the perfect choice for my adventure. Arriving in Moshi, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the Altezza team, who would be my companions on this journey. Their professionalism and passion for the mountain were evident from the start, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable experience.
The journey began at Londorossi Gate, where the rainforest enveloped us in its lush embrace. The air was thick with the scent of earth and foliage, a reminder of the vibrant life that thrives in these parts. Our guides, knowledgeable and attentive, led us through the forest with a steady pace, ensuring we acclimatized properly. The mantra “pole, pole”—slowly, slowly—became our rhythm, allowing us to savor each moment and each breathtaking view.
A Symphony of Nature
As we ascended, the landscape transformed, revealing the diverse climatic zones that Kilimanjaro is famed for. From the heath of the Shira Plateau to the stark beauty of the Arctic desert near the summit, each zone was a testament to nature’s artistry. The crew, a remarkable team of 43 men and women, worked tirelessly, their dedication evident in every step they took. Watching them carry heavy loads with such grace and ease was humbling, a reminder of the strength and resilience that defines the human spirit.
The camaraderie among our group was palpable, each of us united by a shared goal and the awe-inspiring surroundings. Our guides, ever vigilant, ensured our well-being, their expertise a comforting presence. The meals, prepared fresh daily, were a delightful surprise—three hearty meals a day, complemented by tea breaks and snacks, including the most delicious popcorn. It was a culinary journey in itself, a testament to the skill and care of our “kitchen” team.
Reaching for the Sky
The final ascent to Uhuru Peak was a test of endurance and willpower. Departing from Barafu Camp under a starlit sky, the air crisp and thin, we began our climb. Each step was a triumph, a testament to the preparation and support we had received throughout the trek. Reaching the summit, the highest point in Africa, was a moment of pure elation—a dream realized, a memory etched in time.
Descending the mountain, the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. The journey had been more than just a physical challenge; it was a spiritual awakening, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our world. The Altezza team, with their professionalism and warmth, had made this adventure not just possible, but extraordinary.
For those contemplating this journey, I echo the sentiments of my fellow trekkers: don’t think, just do it. The Lemosho Route offers not just a path to the summit, but a journey through some of the most pristine and awe-inspiring landscapes on earth. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve returned to the comforts of home, a reminder of the wild, untamed beauty that awaits those who dare to venture off the beaten path.
