ARRIVAL
Altezza Travel - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), an Altezza Travel representative will greet you and arrange your transfer to the hotel included in your package. The hotel offers all the essentials for a pleasant stay: comfortable rooms, hot water, courteous staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. In the evening, there will be a briefing with our managers to ensure you are prepared to start the climb.
Note: Check-in begins at 2:00 PM.
TREKKING FROM LONDOROSSI GATE TO MTI MKUBWA CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the morning, a guide and mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel for another briefing before you travel by vehicle (approximately 3-4 hours) to the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park: Londorossi Gate (2,200 m). After quickly obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will begin trekking to the first camp on the route: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780 m). Raincoats are essential today as you will be walking through the rainforest. Upon reaching the camp, our professional mountain crew will set up everything, including tents, and prepare lunch for you. After lunch, the group will embark on an acclimatization hike towards Shira 1 Camp, featuring a 300-meter altitude gain, before returning to Mti Mkubwa Camp, where a hot dinner awaits.
Note: The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight altitude gain to expedite the acclimatization process. Taking these hikes seriously is crucial as they enhance your chances of successfully climbing Kilimanjaro and help prevent altitude sickness.
This will be your first day at this altitude, so it is highly recommended to follow these instructions from now on:
● Avoid alcohol and caffeine
● Drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (in small, frequent amounts)
● Take a Diamox pill to help alleviate altitude sickness symptoms. Most climbers take Diamox in the morning before starting their ascent to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. It is advisable to consult your doctor before the trip in case of potential allergies.
At night, you may experience discomfort due to acclimatization to the high altitude: as your breathing pattern changes during sleep, your body receives less oxygen than during the day. Consequently, you may start feeling unwell and develop a headache. Pay attention to your body and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.
TREKKING FROM MTI MKUBWA CAMP TO SHIRA 1 CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - An early wake-up, breakfast, and a gradual trek upwards to 3,500 meters; at this point, you will see stunning views of Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano for the first time.
Overall, the journey from Mti Mkubwa Camp to the second high-altitude Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) is relatively easy and takes about 5-6 hours. This allows you to start the acclimatization process gradually, which is essential for successful trekking. Upon reaching the camp, your team of specialists will prepare lunch, and you will have the opportunity to rest in your tent or explore the nearby area.
TREKKING FROM SHIRA 1 CAMP TO SHIRA 2 CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departing from Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) for a light trek to the second high-altitude camp: Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m). This trek is not challenging, and you will enjoy spectacular views of Africa and the unique flora of Kilimanjaro and its surroundings. Shira 2 Camp is the best spot on the trip to view Mount Meru (the fifth summit of Africa), weather permitting.
Upon arrival at the camp, you will have lunch, and after a two-hour rest, everyone will complete an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp, featuring a 300-meter altitude gain.
Trekking from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp:
Change in Elevation: Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) — Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m)
Hiking distance: 7 km
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Acclimatization hike:
Change in Elevation: Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m) — Destination point en route to Lava Tower (4,270 m)
TREKKING FROM SHIRA 2 CAMP TO THE LAVA TOWER AND DESCENT TO BARRANCO CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you will leave Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m) and head to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section involves many ascents and descents, ending at a camp over 4,600 meters. It may be challenging, and you might feel some discomfort, but to acclimate successfully to the altitude, you need to spend at least 1–2 hours here, where lunch will be served.
Then, you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). Here, you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in its massive size and steepness! The next day, you will climb it, but don’t worry: it features a straightforward hiking trail.
Note:
If one or more participants feel unwell, the group may skip the Lava Tower and adjust the route, following the porters’ road instead. In this case, you will not reach an altitude of 4,630 meters, only ascending to a maximum of 4,400 meters.
TREKKING FROM BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - Early wake-up, breakfast, and the start of summiting Barranco Wall (it is recommended to leave the camp early to avoid crowds from other groups). Climbing the gorge wall is not difficult and takes about an hour. After the climb, you can rest and take photos in front of the Kibo volcano.
Then, you begin a more challenging hike to Karanga Camp, featuring numerous ascents and descents along the route, but don’t worry: our guides are experts at setting an optimal pace for the group. Upon reaching the camp, you will be offered a warm lunch. After a couple of hours, you will complete an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp with a 200-meter altitude gain, then descend back to the camp.
TREKKING FROM KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the morning, after breakfast, you will begin your journey to Barafu Summit Camp (4,640 m), the starting point for a night ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Our team will set up a camp for you in advance, including tents and sleeping bags, so you can relax. After regaining strength, you will complete an acclimatization hike towards the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp (4,800 m) and then return to Barafu Camp, where a hot dinner will be served. It is advisable to spend the rest of the day resting and sleeping before the night ascent.
ASCENT TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO MILLENNIUM CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departing from Barafu Camp (4,640 m) at night, you will begin the ascent of Kilimanjaro: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Technically, the climb is relatively straightforward; however, the high altitude presents the most significant challenge. Each pair of climbers will have a personal guide for the entire ascent to monitor your physical and mental conditions. After successfully reaching Uhuru Peak - the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and the final point of the climb on the Lemosho Route, you may descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then, you will return to Barafu Camp and, after a 2-hour rest, continue your descent to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).
Note:
Remember that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including all broken arms and legs. Please pay attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
