Marangu Gate (1,843 m/6,046 ft) – Mandara Hut (2,700m/8,860 ft)
Mandara Huts - After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Marangu Gate at Kilimanjaro National Park. Today, the journey takes you through a stunning rainforest with dense vegetation, often on a muddy trail. The trekking pace is leisurely and comfortable, allowing ample time to appreciate the natural surroundings, take photos, and enjoy the packed lunch provided. You will reach Mandara Hut (2,700m) after approximately 4 hours of hiking from the Park Gate. There is a worthwhile detour to waterfalls in the rainforest along this route – discuss this with your guide before setting off. All meals are included during the climb, prepared by your guide/porters. Accommodation is in dormitory-style chalets. There are no shower/bath facilities during the climb, and toilets are long drops. Bowls of warm water are available each morning upon request for washing.

Horombo Hut (3,700 m/12,140 ft) – Kibo Hut (4,700 m/15,420 ft)
Kibo Hut (4,700 m/15,420 ft) - Summit via Gilman’s Point (5,690m /18,668 ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft)
Uhuru Peak - An early start is required, with a quick snack and warm drink before setting out in the dark. The hike to Gilman’s Point is a slow, steep ascent on volcanic scree, taking about 5-6 hours. The headlamps on the trail resemble fireflies in a long line. As you near the crater rim, you will witness an unforgettable sunrise over Africa! At this altitude, the curvature of the earth is often visible, and the sunrise enhances this view. Keep your camera ready for numerous photo opportunities along the summit. Upon reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, you are close to Uhuru Peak. A relatively flat hike of about 1.5 hours leads to Uhuru Peak. Spend a few moments at the top and capture photos next to the summit sign.
Horombo Huts - Descend from Uhuru Peak with a sense of accomplishment. The trail down from Gilman’s Point on the Marangu route is often enjoyed by hikers sliding down the scree slope, skidding down the loose gravel with large steps and sideways movements. It’s fun, so give it a try! With each step down, your body enjoys more oxygen. Depending on how you feel, you may take a short rest at Kibo Hut before continuing down to Horombo Hut.

Take time to appreciate the lush vegetation, including the Old Man’s Beard (tree moss) on the giant trees and the towering Giant Ferns. The path features many steps leading down to Marangu Gate. You will be transferred back to Keys Hotel for a hot shower and overnight rest.

This is Africa’s tallest peak, capped with snow and boasting the world’s highest standalone volcanic summits. The mountain is made up of two dormant volcanoes, namely Kibo (5,895m above sea level) and Mawenzi (5,149m above sea level), and one extinct volcano, Shira (3,962m above sea level). While the etymology of its name remains a bit vague, it is presumed to be a combination of the Swahili word ‘Kilima’ denoting ‘Mountain’ and the Kichagga term ‘Njaro,’ loosely meaning ‘Whiteness,’ leading to its epithet of ‘White Mountain.’ Covering an area of 1,712Km2, it was designated a National Park in 1973, opened to tourists in 1977, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and crowned a Natural Wonder of Africa in 2013. An ascent to the top, a soaring climb into the clouds, constitutes a lifelong memory no one ever forgets. Seven official trails are available for climbing up and down Kilimanjaro: Lemosho, Lemosho Western-Breach, Machame, Marangu, Mweka, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe.
