The Mount Evans scenic drive is a 28-mile (45 km) route that ascends over 7,000 feet (2,100 m) in height. It reaches a final altitude of 14,130 feet (4,310 m), making it the highest paved passage in North America. The Denver Mountain Parks system initially schemed this path to connect Summit Lake Park and Echo Lake Park with their lower altitude parks located in the foothills. Initially, the road stemmed from Bergen Park near Evergreen, proceeded to Echo Lake, and continued to the peak. The segment from Echo Lake trailing into Chicago Creek Canyon was considered a secondary offshoot.
