The Needles District Campground - As you travel, you’ll notice Glamping Canyonlands on the right, a popular landmark and accommodation choice for visitors. Continue west on UT-211 to explore the stunning landscapes of the Needles District in Canyonlands National Park.
-
Bears Ears National Monument - Before reaching Canyonlands National Park, you’ll pass through a portion of Bears Ears National Monument. However, be aware that the boundaries of this monument can be complex and may change.
-
Newspaper Rock Recreation Site - This is a must-see stop. Without revealing too much, it’s a site where various cultures have left their marks over the past 2000 years.
-
Indian Creek - Prepare for breathtaking views of the Indian Creek Corridor, a renowned destination for rock climbers. It’s one of the top spots for crack climbing in the U.S., if not globally.
-
CRC Dugout Ranch - When Heidi Redd and her former husband Robert bought the Dugout Ranch in 1967, the road was unpaved from U.S. Route 191, climbers hadn’t yet flocked to Indian Creek, and this part of Canyonlands National Park was rarely visited. Until recently, the Dugout Ranch had no TV or telephone, only gaining satellite internet access.
-
Six-Shooter Peaks View Area - The northern peak is North Six Shooter Peak, slightly taller and larger than its southern counterpart, South Six Shooter Peak. The two peaks are about a mile and a half apart and resemble a pair of revolvers pointing skyward, hence their name.
-
Lockhart Basin - Look for the turnoff to the right for Lockhart Basin Road. This road leads to Moab, but a robust off-road vehicle is necessary for the journey.
-
Needles District Visitor Center - The Visitor Center is approaching on the right. It’s wise to stop here to ensure the trails you plan to visit are open. Water and restrooms are available.
-
Cave Spring - The first pull-out on the left is for Roadside Ruin, which is best saved for the return trip. Shortly after, a sign for Cave Springs will direct you to a road on the left.
-
Cave Spring Trailhead - Continue straight past the ranger residences, and in less than a mile, you’ll find a dirt road with a sign pointing to the Cave Springs Trail. Return to the main park road the same way to avoid missing other park stops.
-
Wooden Shoe Arch Overlook - Known as the Wooden Shoe Overlook, you’ll see why it’s named after the traditional Dutch shoe. Yes, it’s an arch here in the Needles of Canyonlands National Park.
-
The Needles Campground - The Needles Campground and the unpaved Elephant Hill Road are nearby. Six miles down Elephant Hill Road is the trail to Druid Arch. Many backpackers and hikers start their journey to Chesler Park from either the Elephant Hill Trailhead or the Salt Flat Trailhead near the campground.
-
Pothole Point Trail - Approaching the Pothole Point Trailhead, you’ll find slickrock covered with pockets known as potholes or ephemeral pools.
-
Slickrock Cinemas 3 - Just minutes from the road’s end, the Scenic Drive in the Needles district is indeed brief. The next stop is the trailhead for the Slickrock Foot Trail.
-
Big Spring Canyon Overlook - Nearing the turnaround point of the Needles District Tour, you’ll find the Big Spring Canyon Overlook Trailhead, leading to the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers and connecting to Chesler Park area trails. Consider skipping these trails in favor of the previously mentioned ones and begin the return to the park entrance.
