The Night Tour Refuge is a 2-hour light stroll designed for night dwelling animals’ enthusiasts. It’s an excellent opportunity to spot wildlife like sloths, armadillos, porcupines, opossums, coatis, olingos, kinkajous among others, including nocturnal birds and an assorted range of insects.
El Refugio provides an ideal birdwatching spot with species like resting toucans, mot-mots, and black guans available, alongside treetop dwellers like monkeys, coatis, olingos, sloths, frogs, snakes, and a myriad of insects. A typical tour allows you to witness 3-5 kinds of mammals, 5–10 bird species, a few snakes or frogs, and countless insects, offering the largest variety of animals distinguishable in any night tour around the locale.
The tour comprises a group of four to six individuals guided by a local tour leader who will provide an orientation and flashlights before embarking on the stroll through El Refugio’s tracks. Limited slots are available, thus prior booking is advisable.

Best guided tour in Costa Rica - José, our guide, was AMAZING. Both my kids are very knowledgeable about insects and José focused really hard on helping them find the creatures they had hoped to see. Jose is a very knowledgeable guide who clearly loves his job and all the creatures in the forest. My kids said afterwards how nice it was to be able to talk to a guide who was really interested in talking to them and knew what he was talking about and could actually add to their existing knowledge instead of only telling them things they already knew. Best guided tour we did in Costa Rica. It was an easy hike at a good pace. Also Jose let us put our camera on his scope so we got amazing close up pictures of the creatures that we saw ( which included monkeys, sleeping hummingbirds, tarantula, frogs, insects). Highly recommend and ask for Jose😊

Most memorable experience! - Great tour guide and he is very knowledgeable about all kinds of wildlife related stuff in the cloud forest from plants to mammals. I was amazed by how many wildlife we observed during our tour, even a monkey! He is very professional and good at helping us taking pictures. The most memorable experience in Costa Rica! Love it!

Great Nightwalk tour - I did a morning tour with guide Derbey in Monteverde cloud forest and the Nightwalk tour. It was really good. Our guide shows us a lot of animals and his knowledge about the animals is amazing! 100% recommend . It is very special to see animals in the dark

Worth it! - Deyber is a great guide, very knowledgeable, remarkably observant and funny. We went with him on a morning tour and enjoyed learning from him so much that we decided to check out this night walk with him too!
He showed us what signs to look for to find various animals and how to identify them (and avoid some). He set some helpful expectations and we were rewarded with some great sightings. He’s also impressively quick at setting up his binoculars for the best views of anything we spotted. We saw so much wildlife- mot mot, woodpeckers, vipers, sleeping hummingbirds, toucans, salamanders, leaf-cutter ants and even a sighting of a sloth! We really enjoyed our night walk tour.

Double tour experience 👏👏 - Deyber was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable about Costa Rican wildlife and appreciated his kindness and humor throughout the tour. We actually booked the night tour with him after enjoying his day tour so much at the Monteverde cloud forest.
For the night tour you are equipped with a flashlight. I’d wear comfy closed toed walking shoes (because you’ll be walking a short uphill and there were sometimes lines of ants present). Also to catch certain animals you’ll need to walk quickly.
Be sure to join him on his other tours ! I will recommend him for future Monteverde visitors :)

Best nightwalk so far! - Amazing tour, great guide. Deyber makes you feel comfortable, keeps the group together and at the same time is very fanatically looking for everything that lives in the forest. And he can make the best pictures through his telescope ;)

Awesome esperience - This was our first night walking tour in a cloud forest and we realy enjoyed it. It was a much safer experience that we could immagine. Our guide -Deyber - was very prepared and you could understand that is very pasionate about his job. He showed us some of the night life fauna and we've learn so many interesting facts about the animals/insects behavior. Moreover, thanks to Deyber we also came back with some nice pictures and videos.

Breathtaking experience lots of wildlife - Going on this tour I was not expecting to see nearly as many animals as we did.Our guide was excellent at pointing out key details and features of the animals and their habitat.Our guide even took pictures for us of these animals with our phones and his special magnifier.

Night tour magic - The tour was great! Deyber was super knowledgeable and really seemed to enjoy his work. We were able to see two different types of viper snakes, a boa constrictor, a stick bug, a red eyed frog, a sloth, and sleeping hummingbird. deyber made the tour really interesting.
