Highlights
  • SNL Jamaican Tours - Join us in the festivities at the Accompong Maroon Cultural Festival! Nestled in the Cockpit Mountains, the autonomous village of Accompong is inhabited by the progeny of the Koromanti and Ashanti tribes from Ghana, West Africa, who were brought to Jamaica as part of the transatlantic slave trade to toil on sugar estates. The Maroons, comprised of fugitive slaves who fled the plantations, sought refuge in the mountains and established formidable warrior bands. They were known for their defiance.

Every year on January 6, the Accompong Maroons commemorate the signing of the 1739 peace accord with the British. The event takes place in Accompong, St. Elizabeth, and celebrates the Maroons’ triumph in their initial conflict with the British, a struggle for autonomy that spanned over five decades, under the leadership of their renowned warrior chief, Cudjoe. Experience the ceremonies, savor the cuisine, revel in the gumbeh drumming, Maroon tribal melodies & dances, and explore the museum.
