Additional Information

Join us for the exciting Accompong Maroon Cultural Festival! The autonomous village of Accompong, situated in the Cockpit Mountains, is the home of the descendants of the Koromanti and Ashanti tribes from Ghana, West Africa, who were brought to Jamaica during the Atlantic Slave Trade to labor on plantations. The Maroons are descendants of fugitive slaves who fled from the plantations, sought refuge in the mountains, and organized themselves into warrior clans. They were known for their strong resistance.

The Accompong Maroons commemorate the anniversary of the 1739 peace treaty signing with the British every year on January 6. The festival occurs in Accompong, St. Elizabeth, and it celebrates the Maroons’ triumph in the first war against the British–a struggle that spanned more than half a century in their quest for freedom, under the leadership of their late warrior-chief, Cudjoe. Come experience the traditions, cuisine, gumbeh drum music, Maroon tribal songs and dance, and explore the museum.
