Highlights
  • Karavas - Our tour will start from the village of Karavas. We will make a short stop to take photos and visit the village’s small, yet famous bakery. The village of Karavas is located in the northern part of the island, a few kilometers from Potamos, the largest of Kythera’s villages. It is close to a large ravine where all sorts of trees cover fresh water springs flowing from the hills. Most famous among the very many springs are those of Amir Ali, Keramari, Maggana and Portokalia. According to the legend, the latter owes its name to an orange tree on which grew 100,000 oranges. The tree withered some decades ago due to a severe winter.

The inhabitants of Karavas are very active. Portokalia (“the orange tree”), a local association, holds an annual fun fair with traditional dances and sports activities. The Patrician School of Agriculture, the primary school as well as the arch that signals the entrance of the village, were all made possible thanks to donations from the inhabitants.

Additional Information

We kick-off our excursion in the green-filled hamlet of Karavas, positioned on Kythira’s north-eastern side. We’ll pause briefly for photo opportunities and to take in the town’s renowned bakery. From there, we’ll traverse southwards to the heart of the island, stopping by Mitata—a locale previously devastated by a seismic event of 6.9 magnitude on the Richter scale in 2006. Upon arrival, there’s an optional tour of the ancient “Fava’s Liotrivi” olive press (entrance fee of 2€ applies). A crucial part of the island’s history, it was one of Kythira’s earliest olive presses and was recently refurbished by the progeny of the inaugural owner, Eleni Protopsalti, and Kostas Pavlakis. Gain insights into Kythira’s olive oil manufacturing past and witness a quick succession video of the press’s renovation. You also have the option to buy some Kytherian specialties, and even Mr. Pavlakis’s cookbooks featuring authentic recipes from Kythera.
