Arrival in the Chinese Arctic

The journey to Mohe County, often referred to as the Chinese Arctic, was a venture into the unknown. As someone who has spent years studying the polar regions, the allure of Mohe’s unique geographical position was irresistible. The flight from Harbin to Mohe County was a transition from the bustling cityscape to the serene, untouched wilderness. Upon arrival, the crisp air and the vast expanse of snow-covered terrain greeted me, a stark reminder of the harsh beauty that the Arctic regions hold.

Our guide, a local with an intimate knowledge of the land, met us at the airport. The first day was spent exploring Harbin, a city that serves as a gateway to the Arctic. The architecture, a blend of Russian and Chinese influences, was a testament to the region’s rich history. As we boarded the plane to Mohe, the anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable.

The Enchantment of Beihong Village

The second day took us deeper into the heart of Mohe County, to Beihong Village. This remote settlement, nestled amidst the vast Daxinganling Mountains, felt like a world apart. The village, with its wooden houses and snow-laden roofs, seemed to be frozen in time. The locals, resilient and warm-hearted, shared stories of life in this extreme climate, their tales echoing the survival instincts that I have often encountered in my research.

As night fell, the sky transformed into a canvas of swirling colors. The aurora borealis, a spectacle I have witnessed in the polar regions, danced above us. Here, in the Chinese Arctic, it was no less mesmerizing. The vibrant greens and purples painted the night sky, a reminder of nature’s raw and unyielding beauty.

Arctic Village and Beyond

Our journey continued to the Arctic Village Scenic Area, a place that truly embodies the spirit of the Arctic. In the Yanzhi Valley, the silence was profound, broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot.
