Highlights
  • La Huaca del Sol - Huaca de La Luna has very impressive murals in color with the depiction of the Moche god called AIA PAEC. Its façade preserves reliefs in mud with designs of different people such us: fishermen, prisoners, warriors and dancers and as well magical animals like: spiders, reptiles and snikes.
  • Trujillo - We will visit the Main Square, Urquiaga mansion and the Cathedral.

The Urquiaga mansion is property of Banco Central de Reserva del Perú. There is a good collection of pottery, rococo furniture, the desk that was used by Simon Bolivar and an important dinner set offered by the Liberator to Juan Antonio Ochaita y Urquiaga in 1824.

  • Chan Chan - Our next point is Chan Chan, political and administrative capital of the Chimu Kingdom. Its original extension covered about 24 km2 that is why is considered “The World’s largest Mud Brick City ”. On November 28, 1986 , Chan Chan was declared “World Heritage” by the UNESCO.

We will visit the only one area open to the tourists that it is called Tschudi or Nik An Palace. The walls preserve reliefs with the depiction of seaotters, pelicans, cormorants, fishing nets and other sea symbols. During the tour You will find ceremonial plazas, small altars, patios, storerooms, a ceremonial well and finally the funerary platform where the Chimu king was buried.

  • Huanchaco - Huanchaco is an ancient fishing village where the fishermen have preserved the ancestral use of the “small horse reed boats” that were used by the Moche and the Chimu people. During the colonial times, Huanchaco was a port that lost its importance during the 1870’s, when Salaverry port was founded.

Excellent Tour —Highly Recommend - Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. She made history come alive to foreign tourists largely unfamiliar with the Moche and Chimu civilizations. Bravo!

Highlights from Salaverry - Huaca de La Luna (Moon temple) was an unexpected highlight. We also enjoyed the old town centre in Trujillo and the opportunity for lunch on our own in Huanchaco.

Good tour, but NOT wheelchair accessible as advertised - Very interesting archeological sites, however this tour is advertised as wheelchair accessible, and it definitely is NOT! Touring La Huaca del Sol involves numerous stairways, steep ramps, and uneven surfaces. Chan Chan is level, but paths are either sand or fine gravel. Our guide, Wilmer, was very helpful, but after the effort it took my husband to tour La Huaca del Sol, he told him to remain on the van at the other stops. This was appropriate advice, but he was unable to experience the full tour as a result.

Poor Customer Service - Our Oceania cruise ship cancelled our port of call in Salaverry due to caution of political unrest in Peru in March 2023. Since we were not notified of the port cancellation until our 48 hour cancellation window closed, we forfeited the tour along with our deposits. Although several attempts were made by texts, email and WhatsApp calls, there was no reply from the tour company. This was a very disappointing experience and we cannot recommend Tours.pe.

No refund of canceled tour - I contacted this company to cancel a shore excursion from the Salaverry port. I did this 2 weeks before the scheduled tour. Buyer beware, communication and request for payment was prompt when I enquired about the tour months in advance, but being concerned ships were cancelling all Peru ports, I decided to cancel well outside of their penalty phase for cancelation. I sent several emails before getting a response, never received the refund.
