The Venus Gold Battery, an ancient mill of 150 years, ground underground ore for gold extraction. Enjoy the in-depth guided tours and impressive audio-visual demonstrations, taking you through the golden age of the North Queensland rush.
Located in the peripheries of Charters Towers lies the oldest and largest surviving Battery in Queensland – the Venus Gold Battery. Since its establishment in 1872, this pulverizing mill, with its monstrous “stampers,” operated relentlessly, day and night, to reap the costly gold from quartz until 1973.
This tour is suitable for individuals of all age groups. An outstanding experience for gangs, travelers, and those with a penchant for history…
- All travellers must have be fully vaccinated to attend the tour (unless you have a valid exemption or under the age of 16) - Proof of vaccination or exemption must be shown at check-in or you will be refused entry. No refund granted.
- Clients must be wearing flat-soled enclosed shoes. If you are wearing thongs, sandals or high heels you will be declined entry. No refund granted.

Gold Mill tour - Got an understanding of the gold mine history of CT. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and the tour had some suprises that were amazing.

A very interesting step back in time - Thought we would fill a afternoon in and check out the old gold battery
Well l learnt a bit today and from the time the tour started until it finished l was impressed. The tour guide was a character he’s definitely in the right job quick witted and very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend this to everyone traveling through Charters Towers

Very informative and interesting tour. - Our group of eight (4 adults, 4 children) really enjoyed this tour. John, our guide, explained things thoroughly and involved the children. He is clearly very knowledgeable about the battery and mining in general, but his commentary was simple enough for the children to mostly understand, and stay ibterested, while at the same time he could answer in-depth, questions from the adults. We found the tour very interesting.

A must do tour 👍🏻 - We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, John was very knowledgeable & informative with the history however we thought it ended too quickly , only 50 minutes when the tour was meant to be an hour & 15 minutes.
Throughly enjoyed the holograph displays , that was a highlight ! Would definitely recommend visiting 👍🏻

Venus Battery tour, worth a look. - John gave us an interesting tour depicting the history of gold in Charters Towers.
He was very knowledgeable as had himself worked in mines for many years.

Step back in time - The tour guide was excellent and knew his stuff. It was a shame that it no longer operates as a demo. Well worth the effort.

Interesting - It was an interesting experience. We enjoyed the two hologram shows and hearing about how gold was extracted from the rock.
Our guide for the day however looked like he would have preferred to be somewhere else and made comment in a belittling way to a couple of questions raised during the tour. Not good
