The exploration of medieval Naples commences from the city’s main church, widely known as ‘San Gennaro’ for preserving his remains and his blood. As we unravel the mysteries hidden amidst the tombs and gothic engravings, our voyage leads us to the quaint gem: San Giorgio Maggiore, where we have the chance to gaze upon the archaic Christian apse. Our next stopover is at the Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, the final resting place of the Templar Knights or the Knot. As we traverse via San Gregorio Armeno, renowned for shepherds and nativity scenes, we reach the glorious University of Federico II, established by the German Swabian Emperor Federico II, recognized as the earliest secular and public university globally. Our expedition concludes at the impressive Piazza Mercato, a site of historic occurrences and popular myths, revolutions and executions, and we get the chance to witness the city’s oldest gothic church: S. Eligio.
