Enjoy real yucatan street food with an actual local chef - Couldn’t ask for a better tour guide than Alex! He’s a young chef who really knows the ins and outs of the Merida street food scene. He knows the local merchants by name and let’s you discover authentic Yucatan dishes in a 2.5 to 3 hour walk across the bustling market halls. Our group of people was rather small, so we had ample opportunity to ask Alex questions about the food and city life. And he was more than eager to answer them. Be aware: you will try a LOT of different dishes, and the portions can be quite large sometimes. We would advice to skip breakfast - or lunch, if you take the afternoon tour - to fully appreciate all this sweet and savoury goodness.

Authentic Walking Food Tour - Alex was our tour guide. My husband and I signed up for a group tour but ended up being the only ones on this tour. We absolutely loved this more intimate experience and it gave us the opportunity to ask all the questions we had and go at our own pace! Alex is bilingual, speaks great English, and has a great personality! . He is very knowledgeable of traditional cooking techniques in Merida and was happy to share all about them! He did a excellent job sharing Merida culture and history as well! That was a nice bonus. He was easy to talk to, super friendly, very knowledgeable, and well liked by the community! I highly recommend this tour for your trip to Merida it was truly some of the best tasting food on our trip, and we had so much delicious food!

Fun, educational and filling… - Wonderful food and tour experience with a charming, knowledgeable guide. We enjoyed learning about turkey in Yucatán cuisine and visiting the markets and stalls to see what was on offer. Her knowledge and time spent answering questions along with the markets tour was a real bonus.

Excellent Guide, Mixed Experience - Before I dive into my review, I want to clarify that our guide Alex was fantastic -- helpful, patient, and informative. He spoke flawless English to our group of folks from around the world . So Alex gets five stars. There was also plenty of food, and we genuinely liked the majority of it. The tour, however, IMO, needs some adjustments. First, our tour consisted almost exclusively of tiendas in and around Merida's main mercado. Had we better understood this, we would probably have not booked as we were interested in the wealth of foodie options available around all of central Merida and have access to comparable street tacos in LA. Relabeling this tour as "The Best of the Merida Markets" or "Street Taco Stroll" might be more accurate. Again, if you're coming from a city or country that doesn't have authentic Mexican food of any kind -- or have never tried a mango -- perhaps that's irrelevant. Secondly, our tour started at 3pm, which proved to be not the best time for a food tour in Merida. Many stalls were closed in the markets that I expect would have been open for the 10am tour (which we could not attend), but perhaps most importantly 3pm in April, even in the relative shade of the mercado, is a very hot time. Adjusting the tour to begin after dark and feature the various stands that come out at night would likely be more comfortable and entertaining. Merida has a distinct charm that comes out when the sun sets and has plenty to offer within walking distance of the city center.
