Highlights
  • Medellin - During the last decade chocolate has become important as an alternative crop for farmers and regions involved in Coca production. In the mountains of Antioquia the internal conflict of Colombia affected for decades the local communities. Small-scale farmers of the region were surrounded by crimes and violence. Growing coca was almost the only way to survive due to the remote location and lack of opportunities. Just a decade ago in the Eastern highlands, the war ended and paramilitary and guerrilla groups left the region. Nowadays thanks to several social and environmental projects there is hope within the communities and more and more displaced farmers return to their lands. To help small-scale farmers to leave the illegal plantations and integrate them again into society several programs by the European Union and the United Nations invested in infrastructure of the rural area of the Eastern Antioquia and trained farmers and the local communities in sustainable agriculture.

Additional Information

Deep in the Antioquia mountains, the local communities experienced the ravages of Colombia’s internal conflict for many long years. The region’s small-scale farmers lived amidst bombings, gunfire, and other forms of war-related brutality. However, current social and environmental initiatives, such as chocolate production, are infusing hope into these communities, prompting more displaced farmers to return to their lands.

Experience an unmatched day-long immersive journey into Antioquia’s Eastern highlands. The tour features a visit to a cacao production venture, run by the community and sponsored by the United Nations. This initiative encourages local farmers to transition from illegal coca cultivation to sustainable livelihoods. The local women manage the artisanal chocolate production, blending the preservation of native tropical forests with sustainable farming practices. By participating in this tour, you’ll not only learn about cacao farming and the history of the local conflict, but also have the opportunity to engage with the local communities and farmers who lived through the lengthy civil war, and show your support for the local farmer families.

  • Clothing recommendations for the tropical climate. Wear comfortable shoes
  • Don’t forget to wear sunscreen

MOST INTERESTING TOUR BY FAR - Gaston was our tour guide he was a biologist who funny enough majored in the study of bats haha , he was really smart and knowledgeable about most topics , he took us deep into a part of Colombia you'd never be able to see unless you're a real local . this wasn't your typical cookie cutter tour this was a real experience with real people and in a real part of town that went through a lot of conflict but its rising high and really fast through the help of the government and tourism I can't stress enough how important this tour is and how much we learned. we had a lot of fun from harvesting fresh cacao plants to swimming in pristine waters, to eating an amazing home cooked meal from locals to making our own chocolate drinks and sipping it with the locals . truly an amazing and unique experience .
