Planting Roots in Colombia: A Coffee Lover’s Journey in Medellín
Drawn by the allure of Colombia’s coffee culture, I embarked on a journey to Medellín, eager to explore the rural charm of San Sebastián de Palmitas. Little did I know, this adventure would leave a lasting impression on my heart.
A Warm Welcome to Medellín
As I stepped off the plane in Medellín, the vibrant energy of the city immediately enveloped me. Known for its rich culture and stunning landscapes, Medellín has long been on my list of places to explore. This time, my journey was driven by a desire to delve into the heart of Colombia’s coffee culture, and what better way to do so than with a Coffee Tour?
Upon booking the tour, I was pleasantly surprised by the prompt and warm communication from Celene, our tour coordinator. Her welcoming message and detailed instructions set the tone for what would be an unforgettable experience. As a single mother and environmental activist, I often find myself juggling responsibilities, so having such a seamless start to the adventure was a relief.
The Journey to San Sebastián de Palmitas
Our journey began with a comfortable van ride through the bustling streets of Medellín, picking up fellow travelers along the way. The camaraderie among us was palpable, each of us eager to uncover the secrets of Colombian coffee. Our driver, whose name escapes me, was a gentle soul, ensuring we all felt at ease as we made our way to the rural charm of San Sebastián de Palmitas.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by David, our English-speaking guide, whose passion for coffee was infectious. As we ascended the mountain, the landscape unfolded before us in a breathtaking panorama. The distant mountains stood majestically against the clear blue sky, and the crisp mountain air was invigorating. It was a reminder of the natural beauty I strive to protect in my conservation work.
Planting Roots in Colombian Soil
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the opportunity to plant our own coffee beans. As I knelt in the rich Colombian soil, I felt a profound connection to the land and its people. This simple act of planting a coffee tree was a symbolic gesture of hope and sustainability, resonating deeply with my commitment to environmental preservation.
The tour concluded with a delightful meal of fiambre, dessert, and, of course, freshly brewed coffee. Each bite and sip was a testament to the dedication and love that goes into Colombian coffee production. As I savored the flavors, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of Colombia’s landscapes and the warmth of its people.
This experience has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I am grateful to the entire coffee farm crew for their hospitality and passion. As I return to my work in the Amazon, I carry with me the memories of this journey and the inspiration to continue advocating for the preservation of our planet’s natural wonders.
