Riding Waves and Horses: A Mezcal Adventure in Mazatlan
Drawn to Mazatlan’s coastal charm, I traded my surfboard for a horse and embarked on a unique adventure. Join me as I explore the jungle, savor local flavors, and discover the spirit of mezcal in this sun-soaked paradise.
A Ride Through Paradise
Mazatlan, a place where the sun kisses the ocean and the waves whisper secrets to those who listen. I found myself drawn to this coastal gem, not for the surf this time, but for an adventure of a different kind. The allure of horseback riding through the jungle and along the beach, followed by a mezcal tasting, was too tempting to resist. As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve ridden waves in some of the most beautiful places in Central America, but this was a chance to ride something different.
The day began with a pickup from my hotel, a short drive to Mr. Lionso Ranch, where the adventure awaited. The ranch was a serene escape, nestled amidst lush greenery and the distant sound of the ocean. Choosing a horse felt like picking a new surfboard, each with its own personality and promise of adventure. Our guide led us through the jungle, the air filled with the scent of salt and earth, and onto the beach where the horizon stretched endlessly. Riding along the shoreline, the waves lapping at the sand, I felt a familiar connection to the ocean, even from atop a horse.
A Feast for the Senses
After the ride, we gathered at the ranch’s restaurant for a meal that was as much a part of the adventure as the ride itself. The spread was a celebration of local flavors: cheese flambée, machaca burritos, handmade tortillas, and guacamole. But the highlight was an unexpected treat—fresh oysters from local aquaculture farmers we met on the beach. It was a delightful surprise, reminiscent of the spontaneous joys of finding a perfect wave.
As we savored the meal, Mr. Lionis himself joined us, sharing stories of the ranch and his family’s history. His tales were as rich and layered as the flavors on our plates, painting a picture of a life intertwined with the land and sea. His grandson serenaded us with songs in both Spanish and English, adding a personal touch to the already warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The Spirit of Mezcal
The final chapter of the day was a tour of the mezcal distillery on the ranch. Watching the process unfold, from the agave fields to the final product, was like witnessing the creation of a masterpiece. Each flavor we tasted—reposado, white, almond, mango, hibiscus, and tamarind—told its own story, much like the waves I chase across Central America.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the ranch, I reflected on the day’s adventure. It was a reminder that while the ocean will always be my first love, there are other ways to connect with the world around me. This horseback riding and mezcal tasting adventure was a hidden gem in Mazatlan, a place where the spirit of the land and the sea come together in perfect harmony. If you ever find yourself in this sun-soaked paradise, I highly recommend this adventure for a taste of the unexpected.
