Surrounded by dense forests and cool misty air, Mare aux Vacoas is situated at an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level, creating a tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere. • Grand Bassin - Also known as Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin is a lake located 6km southeast of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin, with its Hindu temple, is a sacred lake for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is believed that the water inside the lake connects with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius have declared the Grand Bassin a Holy lake. The Hindu community performs a pilgrimage every year on Maha Shivaratri (Shiva’s Great Night), honoring Lord Shiva. Beside the lake, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.
• Alexandra Falls - The next stop is Alexandra Falls, situated approximately 700m above sea level, and is one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius.

Many have likely seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the island’s most iconic and popular sites. Renowned not only for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors the opportunity to experience nature uniquely.

Once there, visitors should not miss the chance to admire and capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. To take in the full view, one can climb up a wooden platform.

To the right is Alexandra Falls. From this vantage point, the waterfall appears as a silent white stream cascading over the rocky outcrops. • Macchabée Viewpoint - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best place for a stunning panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, stop here for a breathtaking panorama. The vista point is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and is truly spectacular. It is a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne.
