- Trou aux Cerfs - Trou aux Cerfs is a dormant volcanic crater situated in Curepipe. Standing at approximately 605 meters above sea level, this natural marvel is one of the island’s most renowned landmarks. The crater spans about 350 meters in diameter and 80 meters deep, encircled by lush greenery, pine trees, and exotic plants. From its edge, visitors can enjoy stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the island, encompassing the central plateau, nearby mountains, and on clear days, even the distant coastlines. Formed millions of years ago, Trou aux Cerfs is a significant part of Mauritius’ geological history, reminding us of the island’s volcanic origins. The site is serene and easily accessible, frequently visited by joggers and tourists who come to appreciate its natural beauty and the refreshing highland air. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in exploring Mauritius’ volcanic heritage and admiring breathtaking island views.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Mare aux Vacoas is the largest freshwater reservoir in Mauritius, located in the highlands of the Plaines Wilhems district, near Curepipe. Established in 1885 and later expanded, the reservoir is crucial for supplying water to a significant portion of the island. Surrounded by dense forests and cool misty air, Mare aux Vacoas is situated at an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level, creating a tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere. The area is rich in native vegetation and is also close to other natural attractions such as Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and the Black River Gorges National Park. Due to its altitude, the region often experiences cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall, which helps replenish the reservoir. While primarily serving as an essential water source, Mare aux Vacoas is also admired for its peaceful landscape, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking a quiet retreat amidst Mauritius’ lush greenery.
- Grand Bassin - Also known as Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin is a lake located 6km southeast of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin, with its Hindu temple, is a sacred lake for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is believed that the water inside the lake connects with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius have declared the Grand Bassin a Holy lake. The Hindu community performs a pilgrimage every year on Maha Shivaratri (Shiva’s Great Night), honoring Lord Shiva. Beside the lake, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.
- Alexandra Falls - The next stop is Alexandra Falls, situated approximately 700m above sea level, and is one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius.
Many have likely seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the island’s most iconic and popular sites. Renowned not only for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors the opportunity to experience nature uniquely.
Once there, visitors should not miss the chance to admire and capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. To take in the full view, one can climb up a wooden platform.
To the right is Alexandra Falls. From this vantage point, the waterfall appears as a silent white stream cascading over the rocky outcrops. Visitors will also have a plunging view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. Nothing more is needed to soothe the eye.
- Macchabée Viewpoint - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best place for a stunning panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, stop here for a breathtaking panorama. The vista point is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and is truly spectacular. It is a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst the unspoiled rainforest of Mauritius, there are nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
Visitors will be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There is a lovely waterfall off to the right.
The national park is famous for its array of endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint ensures an overview of what it truly comprises.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- Chamarel - Afterward, head to a local restaurant to enjoy a Mauritian lunch.
There will be a choice, and the chef will explain and inquire about the preferred choice.
- Chamarel View Point - At Chamarel Viewpoint, immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of Mauritius, where the island’s west coast unfolds like a living canvas before you. Perched atop a scenic vantage point, this spot offers panoramic vistas that will leave you breathless.
