Leave behind the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots and join us for a personal surfing lesson for two people near Lahaina on Maui Island. You can opt for a session in the early, mid or late morning. Our focus during this surf class will be on safety in the water, correct surfing techniques, unique surfing styles, and the right surfing etiquette. Our highly skilled and professional coaches ensure that by the end of the lesson, you’ll be standing on the board, riding the waves, and stepping off the beach as a newly seasoned surfer. We offer private sessions and do not mix participants from different bookings. We furnish all the necessary gear you’ll need — including a rash guard, a high-quality soft-top surfing board, and reef shoes.

Mile Marker 19 off Highway 30 (Honopi'ilani Highway), two miles south of Lahaina at a surf spot known to locals as 'Guardrails.'
Note: GPS locations do not work with the mile markers on Highway 30 (Honopi'i'ani Hwy), where the beach is located.
Directions: From Lahaina/Kaanapali/Kapalua resort areas:
Drive two miles south of Lahaina on Highway 30 Honoapiiliani Highway. Look for Puamana Beach Park on the ocean side. The meeting location is called 'Guardrails,' which is located 500 yards past Puamana Beach Park, on the ocean side, exactly across from mile marker 19 off of Highway 30 Honoapiiliani Highway. There is a little gravel parking lot to park. The instructor will be at this location 10 minutes prior to the start time of the surf lesson.
Check in 10 minutes early at 'Guardrails' surf spot, Mile Marker 19, Highway 30 (Honopi’ilani Hwy). This should provide enough time to apply sunscreen and let it sink in before getting in the sun and water. The instructor will be in the parking area 10-minutes before the lesson start time. For example, if the lesson starts at 9:20am, the instructor will be there at 9:10am.

If you’re thinking about surfing Maui, this is the company to go with - My husband and I booked a private lesson with Sharky and we had the best time!! We initially had a bit of a scheduling snafu, and Tide worked with us to get us out on the ocean. The lesson was so much fun and my husband and I both were able to stand and surf Maui by the end! Highly recommend Rivers to The Sea!!

Surf's Up!! - Amazing!! Booked a private lesson for our two kids. They both absolutely LOVED it! Highly recommend. Their surf instructor, Eric Totah, was THE BEST. Knowledgeable, professional, patient, and clearly skilled at what he does because both kids were up and surfing in NO TIME!! Plus it was so reasonable ($$$).

Great Experience - Sharks was a great instructor and took the time to show the girls how to be successful and ride waves. He took the time to show them how not to rush to stand which allowed them to get a feel for the board and the balance which ultimately led to them riding much longer and more successfully. Highly recommend this experience and Sharky

Highlight of our trip to Maui - Our guide was patient and knowledgeable. My wife and I are senior citizens and have never surfed before. But yet we each caught a wave and rode it to the shore. The experience was very tiring, but well worth the time and energy. Definitely a highlight of our Maui vacation!

Great Time!! - Me and my fiancé had the best time learning to surf from Eric who has been surfing his entire life. Great instructor! I have never been on any kind of board before but he had me up on the board my 2nd try.

Eric was so patient and... - Eric was so patient and kind with my 8 year old son. It was a great experience for both of us. We were late because of a traffic accident and Eric was still generous with his time. We would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you!

Amazing first-time surfing experience - My two teens, ages 17 and 13, had never been surfing, but Kody was an amazing instructor and had them both up on boards within an hour! He was so patient and kind, and just really good with them. I can't say enough good things. Communication ahead of time was great! We changed locations because conditions were better and it was super-easy to find him. I highly recommend Rivers By The Sea, and particularly Kody--he's the BEST!

Best surfing experience - Kody was fantastic! Walked us through the discipline of surfing and techniques. What a blast I had with my son/daughter to experience together. He even pushed us towards the end to catch another good wave. Hang ten and major Maholo to Kody! You rock!!!!
