Guided bike tour best option for us - Not knowing quite what to expect in a downhill guided tour, the company does a lot to prepare you at the offices with a safety video and with a lot of pre-amble instruction on the van ride up to the top of Haleakala. We went in early January 2023 and wore pants, long sleeved shirt, runners. I brought my purse but left it in the van. In retrospect I would wear bike shorts and long sleeved shirt and short sleeved shirt underneath. You don't need anything else except your phone for some photos and a credit card for some lunch. The cycling is quite nerve-racking at first (maybe the first 3 to 5 mins. since I was not prepared for how fast we went. Once I got used to the excellent brakes and turned my head for turns and stayed in the lane by looking ahead a few metres, I was comfortable. We stopped a few times for traffic to pass us and a few times for some scenery. We had 3 hills to climb - two were on foot. They weren't difficult. We ate at the Ohana Island Grindz halfway down for lunch break (45 min.) - recommend the ramen soup and the awesome cheese burger. We checked in around 9:30, started the ride around 10:30 and were done by 2:30pm. Would do this again and likely do it guided again, since the van followed us and held the traffic back making me feel safer.

Sunrise Surprise - The whole experience was great! We really enjoyed ourselves. The drive up to the crater was super easy and enjoyable. Marlin made it a great experience and made us forget it was so early in the morning. He shared insightful information and shared some cool photo spots. The bike tour was fun. Sarah provided some awesome recommendations for along the tour and in Maui in general. We would've loved to be in our separate group for the guided bike tour. We were grouped with less confident riders which made the experience slower, and less fun/thrilling than expected. We would definitely recommend this experience ... The reviews don't lie about it being cold! Take warm clothes!

Perfect Day Excursion - Family of 5 ages 61-18 years old and everyone had a great time. Very unique opportunity to experience this area, including the smell of the eucalyptus forest - wow! The guide information was all spot on and we stopped at the farm stand and the Kula lodge for a lunch break (gorgeous outside seating). Most people were whipping by us and perhaps missing some of the experience. Suggest taking your time, this is not a race, and enjoying especially the first halve of the ride before you run into traffic. Bikes are great, they offer back packs and rain gear to borrow. Would definitely do it again.

Fantastic excursion! - This was by far my favorite activity we did on our vacation. The guide to Haleakala state park was hilarious and informative and we got some stunning pictures thanks to him. The down hill ride was well paced by the guide and again we got stunning pictures. It was a great half day excursion. I would highly recommend the tour. Hands down I would do it again if we go back to Maui.

Highly Recommended-great family activity - Great day for family (3 teenager/early 20 year old kids). Our driver (Coach) was entertaining, knowledgeable, and shared many interesting personal stories. Our guide for the bike ride was very helpful-he gave some of our family members enough confidence in their ride skills that we were able to go much faster and have more fun than we would have if we had been self-guided. Highly recommend.

Fantastic self guided ride down Haleakala - My son, son in law and I did the morning self guided tour. Great experience and would do it again. Informative bus ride up the volcano. We liked the self guided tour since we could go at our own pace, which was quite fast. We made it from the drop off point back to Haiku in about 1.5 hrs. The bikes were in great shape. Not too many cars so we felt very safe coming down the hill. Highly recommend.

Super fun - Excellent day cruising down the Volcano. The bikes were in Excellent condition. The safety briefing was very thorough. There's 3 very short sections (around 50-100yrds each) where you have to pedal. Or you can choose to just jump off and walk a little. This excursion is worth every penny!

Fun fun fun! - The ride was fun, with a stop for photos, a stop to shed a layer of garments, and a stop for lunch. The package included a trip to the summit to view the crater, along with a unique photo that made me look like I was skydiving. Our driver, Kimo, was very entertaining, while our 70 year old bike leader Tim was very competent and funny. The only bobble was in the scheduling department, who called me the day before to ask me to shift a day as I was the only person scheduled. That turned out to be because they had mistakenly moved a group of 8 off my day. That group protested and was restored to my original day, at which point they called me back and asked me to move back to my original schedule.

Average experience - We took a similar bike tour several years ago but, with a different operator and with a much better overall experience. While Bike Maui's equipment was in good condition (bikes & brakes and helmets), the actual guided tour experience was just average. The van driver spent more time talking about himself and telling stories about bike accidents and car accidents on the road we would be traveling than he did about the volcano, area details, etc. He raised the level of nervousness of several of the inexperienced bike riders with his diatribe. The actual downhill bike ride seemed to be focused on getting to the end quickly moreso than stopping to enjoy the scenery, taking pictures, talking about the local history, etc. One benefit of the guided tour was having the van travel behind the group that tended to block the traffic for a safer rider. If I returned again I would do the self-guided tour so I could travel at my own pace.

Need to value customers more - We were actually very disappointed in our experience. We enjoyed the tour but were told last minute we could not be picked up even though we paid for pickup. We were told getting an Uber to and from the bike shop would be an easy process. It cost us 180$ and getting a Lyft out of there took us an hour. I even asked the bike rental shop for help securing a cab. She handed me a phone number that did not work. Very sad with how guests are treated. We will not be recommending this company to any of our friends or family vacationing in Maui.
