As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can captivate both kids and adults alike. So, when I heard about the Hawaii Butterfly Farm nestled in the heart of Maui, I knew it was a must-visit for our family. The idea of a private tour at a butterfly farm, where we could get up close and personal with these delicate creatures, was too enticing to pass up.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff who immediately made us feel at home. The farm is a certified Monarch Waystation, dedicated to the propagation and education of butterflies. The kids were thrilled to learn that all the butterflies here are home-bred and hand-raised, making them unique to Hawaii. The staff’s passion for these beautiful insects was infectious, and it wasn’t long before we were all eager to dive into the experience.

Hands-On Fun and Learning

The tour began with a walk through the butterfly production facility, where we learned about the different types of butterflies raised on the farm. The highlight for the kids was definitely the butterfly flight house. Here, we had the chance to feed the butterflies by dipping our fingers in nectar and holding still as they perched delicately to drink. The staff ensured everyone had a chance to participate, and the kids were absolutely mesmerized.

One of the most memorable moments was when we were given hibiscus flowers to hold, allowing the butterflies to perch on them. I managed to capture a stunning video of a butterfly landing on a flower, which I then placed behind my ear. The vibrant colors of the flowers and the butterflies made for some truly beautiful photos and videos. I highly recommend keeping your camera ready, as these moments are fleeting but unforgettable.

A Family Adventure to Remember

The educational aspect of the tour was equally impressive. The staff were knowledgeable and eager to share their love for nature and the environment. They patiently answered all our questions and even gave each of us a sticker and a packet of milkweed seeds to take home. The seeds are an important plant for monarch butterflies, and the kids were excited to plant them in our garden back home.

Though the tour itself was a little over an hour, it was packed with fun and learning. We made a day of it by exploring the nearby Olowalu General Store and indulging in some delicious pies at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop. The coastal drive to the farm was breathtaking, and we even took a short hike to see the petroglyphs in the area.
