Your guide will escort you to the Crypt of Original Sin, a ninth-century B.C. cave turned monastery by Benedictine monks, featuring artistry from the ‘Painter of flowers of Matera’. Uncovered in 1963 by local enthusiasts, this crypt, once a livestock shelter, has become an essential part of Matera’s, the European Capital of Culture 2019, tour.
Next, you’ll continue to the Church of Madonna della Palomba where you will explore its underground facilities including a Neviera, a Refectory, a Cellar, a Cistern, and a Kitchen.
Lastly, you’ll visit the Crypt of San Michele Arcangelo in the Masseria Jesce in Altamura. Inside, you will find mid-fourteenth-century frescoes, including a ‘deesis’ (Byzantine iconography) by Giovanni da Taranto, along with wall panels illustrating scenes from the Marian cycle, crafted by Didaco de Simone in the seventeenth century.
