Highlights
  • Parco della Murgia Materana - Since 2007, the Regional Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera has also been declared a World Heritage Site. It is a large rocky hilly area marked by deep karst fissures called: “Gravine”. The show that appears before the eyes is truly breathtaking, since the whole inhabited area of the Sassi appears in all its splendor beyond the ravine. During this historical-naturalistic walk, the visitor will be able to follow the path of man: from the Palaeolithic settlements to the entrenched Neolithic villages of “Murgia Timone”, from the pastoral communities of the Middle Ages to the rock settlements of the Greek-Byzantine hermitic communities that plateau they founded monasteries, graduations and Rock Churches.
Along the route of this guided trek you reach the bottom of the valley of the Gravina torrent.

Additional Information

The Murgia plateau, which stands opposite the Sassi of Matera, forms the Regional Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera, distinguished as a World Heritage Site since 2007. This expansive rocky hillock locale is characterized by deep karst gaps named ‘Gravine’. The sight that unfolds is genuinely awe-inspiring, as the entire inhabited region of the Sassi is revealed in full glory beyond the gorge. Within an unexpected and captivating natural setting, one embarks on an initially rather steep trail, guided by Environmental Naturalistic Guides, leading towards the Gravina stream. In a space abundant in flora, resides a typical Rock Church that ‘voices’ history. As we lift our gaze… the Sassi… observed from the stream… astounding! We head back up to the flat grounds of Murgecchia and trace along the edge of the Gravina.
