Additional Information

Matera is a city rich in cultural and historical significance, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the European Capital of Culture 2019, and a cave city with an existence of over 5,000 years. It offers the experience of touring its historic city centre and ancient cave homes, tasting the local Basilicata cuisine and wine, and options to explore either the cave house museum or a cliff church.

Recognized as one of the world’s most remarkable and well-preserved cave settlements, the ancient cave habitations, or ‘sassi’ of Matera, magnetize many visitors. We begin in the historic heart of the city, exploring the baroque sector called ‘Il Piano’, distinguished by churches and palaces constructed over the caves.

Next, we uncover the areas of ‘Sasso Barisano’ and ‘Sasso Caveoso’, displaying the age-old ‘sassi’ hewn into the Gravina canyon. We also take a momentary rest to contemplate in the old district of ‘Civita’. The tour includes the sampling of local cuisine and wine at the Panecotto Restaurant, followed by an optional visit to either the cave house museum or a cliff-side church, both hewn from rock.

Stunning Matera hust at its best! - The whole town of Matera was absolutely amazing. A lot of walking up and down steps but worth it in the end. Our guide Indigo was a wealth of knowledge and knew his history. He was also a perfect gentleman!

Average - I enjoyed seeing all of the major highlights in Matera and learning a little bit of history. I signed up for an English tour but unfortunately there were only 4 of us who were English. The rest of the tourists were German so our guide had to translate twice, which meant we had less time exploring and learning more information and more time standing around, waiting. The driver was 20 minutes late picking me up and we had to wait another 20 minutes once in Matera for the rest of the group to show up. I don’t think I got my money’s worth. However, Matera is a must see!!

Over priced…..we could have just walked it. Didn’t do anything extra than you could of done by yourself. - No worth the money. It was a large group. Just walked the town, could have explored without tour leader. Tour leader was ok, had to wait while he explained in different languages. For the price, we were expecting more.
