• Temple of Karnak - Although little remains of Amenhotep’s once grand memorial temple, the two majestic statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III still stand guard at the ancient entrance, 3,400 years later. Visitors can explore the Nile’s shores, opposite Luxor, and admire these monumental sculptures. Besides the impressive twin statues, there are smaller figures of the Pharaoh’s wife, Tiy, and mother, Mutemwia. Guests can also view the sandstone panel carvings depicting the Nile god Hapy. Despite much of the Colossi being lost to time and weather, the site still evokes a sense of its former grandeur.

• Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The expansive Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari is a funerary monument that rivals the Pyramids. Built into the towering cliffs that shelter the Valley of the Kings, it features three large terraces connected by ramps, each with a colonnade of stark, mostly unadorned square pillars. Named after one of the few female pharaohs, who called it “Splendor of Splendors,” much of the temple’s construction dates back to earlier rulers, starting with Mentuhotep II in 2050 BC. Many sphinxes and statues have disappeared, giving the structure a monolithic appearance. The cool stone interior offers relief from the heat and showcases well-preserved wall reliefs and hieroglyphics, some in vibrant colors.

• Valley of the Queens - Nestled in a Y-shaped ravine on the Nile’s West Bank, the Valley of the Queens is an ancient burial site for the wives of Pharaohs from the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties. It houses tombs of royal wives, children, and other royal family members, including princesses and princes. The most renowned tomb is that of Queen Nefertari, occasionally open to visitors. Considered Egypt’s finest, Nefertari’s tomb has been fully restored but is often closed. Nefertari, one of Ramses II’s five wives, has a grand shrine built by him, adorned with colorful chamber wall scenes and golden stars on the ceiling.

• Colossi of Memnon - The Colossi of Memnon (Arabic: el-Colossat or es-Salamat) are two enormous stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who ruled during Dynasty XVIII. For 3,400 years (since 1350 BC), they have stood in the Theban Necropolis, west of the Nile from modern Luxor.
