Into the Heart of the Sahara

The call of the desert is one that I could not resist. As a former extreme sports athlete, the thrill of the unknown and the promise of adventure are what drive me. So when I heard about the Sahara Experience, I knew it was time to pack my bags and head to Marrakesh. The journey began with a drive through the High Atlas Mountains, a place where the roads twist and turn like a serpent through the rugged landscape. The Tizi n’Tichka Pass offered panoramic views that were nothing short of breathtaking. Each stop along the way was a chance to capture the beauty of the mountains, a reminder of the many peaks I’ve conquered in my past.

Our guide, Hassan, was a revelation. His knowledge of the area was unparalleled, and his stories brought the history of the region to life. As we traveled through the Valley of Roses to the Dades Gorge, I was reminded of the many treks I’ve undertaken in deserts around the world. The next day, we ventured to the Todra Gorge, a place where the canyon walls towered above us like ancient sentinels. As we continued our journey to Merzouga, the anticipation of the Sahara grew with each passing mile.

Arriving in Merzouga, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi stretched out before us, a sea of sand that promised adventure. The camel trek across the dunes was an experience like no other. As the sun set, the colors of the desert shifted, creating a mesmerizing display that left me in awe. The night spent in a traditional Berber camp was a highlight, with music and storytelling around the campfire that transported me to another world. The luxury of the camp was a pleasant surprise, offering a level of comfort that was unexpected in such a remote location.

The final day began with a sunrise over the dunes, a sight that will forever be etched in my memory. The camel ride back to Merzouga was a chance to reflect on the incredible journey we had undertaken. As we made our way back to Marrakesh, the memories of the past three days played out in my mind like a thrilling adventure film.
