Into the Heart of the High Atlas

The journey began in the vibrant city of Marrakech, a place that never fails to captivate with its bustling souks and aromatic spices. As a wildlife photographer, I have always been drawn to the raw beauty of nature, and the promise of the High Atlas Mountains was irresistible. Our guide, a charismatic local, led us through the winding roads that climbed higher and higher into the mountains. The air was crisp, and the views were nothing short of breathtaking.

We made a stop at a local Argan oil cooperative, where I was reminded of the importance of sustainable practices. The women there demonstrated the traditional methods of extracting the oil, a process that supports their community and preserves their cultural heritage. It was a humbling experience, and I couldn’t help but think of the parallels with my own work in conservation.

As we continued our ascent, the landscape transformed. The lush greenery gave way to rugged terrain, and soon we were standing at the highest mountain pass in North Africa. The sense of adventure was palpable, and I felt a familiar thrill, akin to spotting a rare animal in the wild.

Our next stop was the ancient ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that seemed to rise out of the desert like a mirage. With a local guide, we explored the kasbah, learning about its role in trans-Saharan trade and its cinematic history. It was fascinating to see how this ancient site had been preserved, a testament to the importance of protecting our cultural and natural heritage.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa. The cinematic landscapes were a photographer’s dream, and I couldn’t resist capturing the play of light and shadow across the desert.

The Magic of the Sahara

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the Merzouga Desert. Riding camels across the golden dunes of the Sahara was an experience like no other. The vastness of the desert, with its ever-shifting sands, was both humbling and awe-inspiring.

We spent the night in a traditional Berber camp, where the stars seemed to stretch endlessly across the sky. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet.
