Merzouga, situated near the Algerian border, is a modest town in Morocco’s Sahara Desert. The town is recognized as an entrance to Erg Chebbi, a vast stretch of sand dunes located to the town’s north. To the west of Merzouga is Dayet Srji, a seasonal salt lake that typically dries up during the summer. However, when filled, the lake draws a variety of migratory and desert-dwelling birds, such as desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars, and on rare occasions, flamingos.
