- Jemaa el-Fnaa - Jemaa el-Fna square is Marrakesh’s premier attraction, serving as a key cultural hub since its establishment in the eleventh century. It symbolizes the city with its rich tapestry of Moroccan cultural traditions showcased through music, religion, and art. Throughout the day and into the night, visitors can access various services such as dental care, traditional medicine, fortune-telling, preaching, and henna tattooing, along with water-carrying, fruit, and traditional food offerings. Additionally, there are captivating performances by storytellers, poets, Berber musicians (Imazighen), and Gnaoua dancers.
- Koutoubia Mosque - The Koutoubia Mosque stands as one of Marrakech’s most remarkable monuments and one of Morocco’s most exquisite mosques. With a complex history, it features a dual sanctuary and a minaret. The initial Koutoubia was completed in 1157, followed by the second and the minaret a year later under Abdelmoumen’s orders. The sanctuaries are notable for their innovative design, emphasizing the qibla wall (prayer direction). The minaret, constructed from stone and standing 77 meters tall, includes a ramp for reaching the top. Its decoration is understated, featuring carved reliefs and bands of white and green.
- Bahia Palace - The Bahia Palace, a 19th-century structure, boasts rooms adorned with exquisite stuccos, paintings, and mosaics, along with a series of gardens. Intended to be the grandest palace of its era, “Bahia” translates to “brilliance” in Arabic. Like other period buildings in different countries, it aimed to encapsulate Islamic and Moroccan styles. The palace includes a 2-acre (8,000 m²) garden with rooms opening onto courtyards. Established at the 19th century’s end by Si Moussa, the sultan’s grand vizier, for personal use, the palace was named after one of his wives. The harem features a large courtyard with a central basin, surrounded by rooms for concubines. As the black slave Abu Ahmed gained power and wealth, he commissioned the palace, employing craftsmen from Fez. Admission is 100 MAD (10 Euro).
- Ben Youssef Madrasa - The Ben Youssef Madrasa is a stunning example of Andalusian-Berber architecture in Morocco. Founded by Sultan Abou al Hasan in the 14th century, it was later rebuilt and enhanced by the Saadi dynasty, resulting in the lavishly decorated monument adjacent to the Ben Youssef Mosque in Marrakesh. Now a museum, the former madrasa contains 130 cells that once housed nearly 900 students studying the Quran and other scientific and religious subjects. This site is a must-visit for those interested in Arab culture and the Islamic faith.
- Souk Semmarine - The souks, or open-air markets, of Marrakech are the largest in Morocco and among the world’s most intriguing shopping destinations. Filled with carpets, brass goods, antiques, spices, and leather, the souks are a must-see for any traveler. Visitors will have an unforgettable experience exploring the Marrakech souk with a guide.
