The Call of the Atlas Mountains

As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my heart has always been drawn to the untamed beauty of Africa. This time, my journey took me to the vibrant landscapes of Morocco, a country that promised a blend of cultural richness and natural wonders. The Moroccan Adventure was a four-day journey from Marrakech to Fez, and it was an experience that left me in awe.

Our adventure began in the bustling city of Marrakech, where our guide, Abdul, greeted us with a warm smile and a 4x4 vehicle ready for the journey ahead. Abdul, a multilingual guide fluent in English, French, Arabic, and Berber, was not just a driver but a storyteller who brought the history and culture of Morocco to life. As we drove through the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa, the views of the High Atlas Mountains were nothing short of breathtaking. The winding roads and Berber villages nestled in the valleys below were a testament to the resilience and beauty of this region.

Our first stop was the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village that has stood the test of time. Walking through its ancient streets, I couldn’t help but imagine the caravans that once passed through, laden with salt and spices. The day ended in the Dades Valley, where we were welcomed by the sight of the “monkey toes” rock formations and the hospitality of the local people.

Into the Heart of the Sahara

The journey continued through the Todra Gorges, where towering red cliffs provided a dramatic backdrop for our drive. As we approached Fez, the “French village” of Ifrane offered a surprising contrast with its European-style architecture.
