Highlights

In the first valley, Lalla Takerkoust, we begin our Plateau Kik day trip from Marrakech by driving towards the Dam of Lalla Takerkoust on the Nfis River, offering a stunning view of the Atlas mountain range. We will take the track road passing through several Berber villages located at the base of the Atlas Mountains. Our journey continues to the Kik Plateau, featuring a beautiful panorama with the lake at its center. This plain is dominated by the massive water body of the dam and the High Atlas mountain range (with peaks over 4000 meters). Next, we stop at the holy village of Saint Moulay Brahim, known for its annual holy ceremony held in July. We then arrive at the picturesque spot of Asni Ouirgane, offering a splendid view of Mont Toubkal, which is snow-covered during winter and spring.

Leaving Asni, we follow the Tizi n’Test road towards Marrakech, passing through the Moulay Brahim Gorges. At Tahanaoute, a small road quickly leads to the Ourika Valley, where lunch is reserved at a good restaurant.

The second valley is the Asni Ouirgane Valley, showcasing some of the most beautiful countryside in Morocco and a lake that fills the valley floor. About an hour from Marrakech lies the magnificent green valley of Ouirgane, hidden in the foothills of Mount Toubkal. You can visit the Tahanout souk (on Tuesdays and Saturdays) before driving through the Ghezaia river gorges on the way to Asni, famous for amethyst, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in the fabulous mountain scenery. Ouirgane is the highest point of the surrounding mountains, reaching altitudes of up to 2300 meters in some areas and spreading over many kilometers.

The Asni and Ouirgane Valley, known as The Happy Valley, with its amazing greenery, wild flora, and fauna, is an ideal starting point for trekking enthusiasts.

In the third valley, Ourika, we crossed a wooden bridge hanging above the river and then climbed with a local guide to see the waterfall. The climb was challenging in some places, and we were very glad to have sturdy hiking shoes and be reasonably fit. The waterfalls were beautiful, the view was lovely, and we enjoyed a drink at the top before descending. Along the walk, there are several local Berber vendors selling jewelry, woodcraft, rugs, and ceramics. There was no real pressure to buy anything, and we enjoyed watching the Berber wood craftsman using his ‘Black and Decker’ original drill to make holes in stone lanterns.

Trip to the mountains with Idal #1 - Idal #1 took us on an unbelievable trip today. We started off with a camel ride outside of the the city centre, and then proceeded to the Atlas Mountains while making a few other stops along the way. Once we got to the mountains we were greeted by another tour guide who took us on a hike through the mountains. After the hike we had delicious lunch in the village beside a river. Idal provided us with plenty of facts along the way about Morocco and it’s people, which was fantastic. This tour was the highlight of our trip - thank you Idal!
