Exploring Ecuador: A Family Adventure on the Montecristi & Rain Forest Tour
Eager to explore Ecuador’s rich culture and natural beauty, I embarked on the Montecristi & Rain Forest Tour with my family. Join me as I recount a day filled with wildlife, local crafts, and unforgettable experiences.
A Day of Discovery in Manta
When I first heard about the Montecristi & Rain Forest Tour in Ecuador, I knew it was a must-do for our family. The promise of culture, cuisine, history, and nature all wrapped into one day was too tempting to resist. As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that offer both education and entertainment for the kids, and this tour seemed to tick all the boxes.
Our adventure began with a visit to the bustling fish market at Plage de Tarqui. The kids were fascinated by the array of seafood on display, and a kind vendor even gifted us some fresh mangos. I have to say, those mangos were the juiciest and most delicious I’ve ever tasted! We also picked up some plantain chips, which quickly became a favorite snack among our fellow travelers on the bus.
Next, we visited the boatyard, where we watched skilled craftsmen at work. It was a great opportunity for the kids to see traditional boat-building techniques up close. The sense of community and craftsmanship was truly inspiring, and it was a joy to share this experience with our new bus-friends.
Nature’s Wonders and Unexpected Delights
Our journey continued to the Pacoche Wildlife Refuge, a lush rainforest teeming with wildlife. However, the trail was a bit crowded, so our guide Dennis, ever the problem-solver, suggested an alternative: an ocean overlook. The decision was unanimous, and we were rewarded with the sight of pilot whales breaching off the coast. The kids were thrilled, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty surrounding us.
Before heading into the rainforest, we made an impromptu stop at JR’s coffee plantation. This unexpected detour turned out to be a highlight of the day. We learned about the coffee-growing process and were invited into JR’s home, where he shared his personal story with us. It was a touching experience that added a personal touch to our adventure.
Finally, we ventured into the rainforest, where we spotted sleepy howler monkeys and vibrant flowers. The kids were captivated by the sights and sounds of the jungle, and it was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn about the diverse ecosystem of Ecuador.
A Taste of Ecuadorian Culture
After our rainforest exploration, we enjoyed a delicious fish lunch with breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. The meal was a feast for the senses, and it was the perfect way to recharge before our final stop: Montecristi.
In Montecristi, we witnessed the intricate art of Panama hat weaving. The artisans’ skill and dedication were truly impressive, and we couldn’t resist purchasing a few hats as souvenirs. The kids were fascinated by the process, and it was a great way to introduce them to Ecuadorian culture and craftsmanship.
As we made our way back to the cruise ship, hats in hand, I reflected on the day’s adventures. It was a perfect blend of culture, nature, and family bonding, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. A big thank you to Dennis, our guide, for making the day so memorable. If you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure in Ecuador, the Montecristi & Rain Forest Tour is not to be missed!
