Additional Information

Welcome, immerse yourself in the intriguing history of the Amazonian Jews. These individuals are the progeny of Moroccan and indigenous Jewish elements who inhabit various cities and towns within the Amazon Basin, spanning Brazil and Peru, including places such as Belém, Santarém, Alenquer, Óbidose, Manaus in Brazil, and Iquitos in Peru. These men wed indigenous women, ultimately birthing
families rich in Moroccan ancestry from the 19th century. Several Moroccan Jews also made their homes in secluded riverside settlements across Brazil. The revered Rabbi Shalom Imanu ElMuyal, known for his healing abilities and holy presence, became a cherished saint to syncretic Christians
and other emerging faith groups in Brazil, earning approval from non-Jews in Brazil. He bore the moniker ‘Santo Moisézinho’. Our tour includes visits to the Beit Yacoov Synagogue, Beit Chabat, the Jewish Cemetery, and concludes at the Teatro Amazonas.
