- Mahone Bay - Visit Mahone Bay and capture a photo of the renowned three churches, and perhaps explore a few local attractions. Proceed to the Lunenburg Historic District. In 1753, many new settlers were transported from Halifax to Lunenburg, intended to be the hub of the planned settlement. The initial arrivals were those residing in the town of Lunenburg, with farm lots spread across the peninsula, including Mahone Bay. They came under the guidance of mariner Ephraim Cook. The settlers on the Lunenburg Peninsula, including today’s village of Mahone Bay, were foreign Protestants, comprising German, Swiss, and Montbéliardais settlers. The village gained popularity for shipbuilding in the 18th century. Mahone Bay’s boat-building history began with the Mi’kmaq, who crafted birch bark canoes. The British initiated the first industrial ship production, establishing sawmills to supply lumber for shipbuilding.
- Lunenburg - The Old Town of Lunenburg is celebrated as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic District. Lunenburg is among the best-preserved colonial settlements in North America. Founded in 1753 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, it offers much to all visitors. Historically, Lunenburg’s economy was based on the offshore fishery, and today it is home to Canada’s largest secondary fish-processing plant. The town flourished in the late 1800s, with many architectural treasures from that period. This unique place has been a lively fishing village since its inception. Its beautiful architecture and active waterfront reflect this rich history. Visitors can explore the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg Academy, board the famous Bluenose schooner, or stroll through the vibrant streets, soaking in the charm of this UNESCO heritage village. In the 1800s, Lunenburg thrived through shipping, trade, and fishing.
