- Blue Bay Marine Park - The Blue Bay Marine Park is a premier spot to witness the stunning marine life and enjoy snorkeling in Mauritius. At the Marine Park, you can choose to view the underwater world through the glass bottom of the boat or dive in for a snorkeling adventure.
Snorkeling at the park is highly recommended due to the breathtakingly colorful fauna and flora. With an average depth of 5.5 meters and crystal-clear waters providing excellent visibility, the snorkeling conditions are perfect. You’ll have an amazing view of the reef, fish, and a wide variety of corals.
The Blue Bay Marine Park is home to mangroves, algae, seagrasses, corals, and other marine life. There is also a diverse range of fish species, including Damselfish, Surgeonfish, Butterflyfish, juvenile Sailfin tangs, as well as tiny Pipefish and Trumpetfish.
Note: All activities are supervised to ensure the protection of the flora and fauna, respecting marine life and its ecosystem!
- Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve - Next, proceed to Ile aux Aigrettes, a small coral island just off the coast of Mahebourg. The island is a designated nature conservation site, preserved by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.
The boat trip to Ile aux Aigrettes departs from Pointe Jerome. You’ll explore Ile aux Aigrettes and enjoy the authentic Mauritian nature with an expert guide leading the way. You’ll discover plants and animals unique to Mauritius, some of which have been close to extinction, like the pink pigeon, a bird that was endangered for many years. You’ll also visit the indigenous plant nursery.
During your visit to Ile aux Aigrettes, you’ll witness breathtaking scenery of the South East of Mauritius and gain insights into the history of Mauritius. You’ll also encounter beautiful trees with intriguing names like Ox wood, Pipe wood, Rat wood, and Bottle palm. There’s also a chance to see a rare orchid in full bloom.
- Mahebourg Museum - Then, enjoy a 3-course lunch at a local restaurant, featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken, fish, and vegetables.
Afterward, head to Mahebourg to visit the National History Museum of Mauritius, which offers a historical journey of the island dating back to the 18th century.
The Naval Museum of Mauritius showcases the remnants of the French colonial empire. The museum’s appeal lies not only in its collection of exhibits but also in its historical significance as a building. It’s worth seeing both the exterior of the building and the various exhibitions. Additionally, you’ll find exquisite artifacts from numerous shipwrecks. Some bones of extinct species like the Giant Tortoises and the Dodo are displayed at the museum, bearing testimony to their existence until a few hundred years ago.
- Mahebourg Waterfront - After some time, visit the Mahebourg waterfront to learn about the fascinating culture and history of Mauritius. Situated in the traditional Mauritian village, the new Mahebourg Waterfront is perfect for a relaxing walk and a journey back in time, exploring local Mauritian history! You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the epic battle fought in this region. There’s also the memorial known as Bataille de le Passe, which honors the fighters who lost their lives in the battle. You’ll get to see the panoramic view where the battle took place.
- Bazar Street - Then, head to the Mahebourg local market, a spectacular sight for those eager to experience the vibrant local culture. You’ll find amazing products here at great bargains. Initially focused on silks and textiles, the Mahebourg market now offers a wide variety of seashells. The market provides typical products such as vegetables and fruits for the locals, as well as a wide range of local handicrafts and souvenirs from the paradise island.
One must-try is the food. At the Mahebourg Market, you’ll have a large selection of food such as Briyani, Dholl Puri (lentil pancakes), Chinese Noodles, or the famous Gato Pima (split pea fritters). They make for a delicious street food tasting, and don’t worry, your diet secrets are safe!
- Frederick Hendrick Museum - On the way, visit the Frederick Hendrick Museum. The Frederik Henrik Museum is a historical site that currently holds the remnants of the first human settlement in Mauritius. Located at Old Grand Port, this site is a historical landmark bearing witness to the Dutch and French colonial settlements in Mauritius, on the southeast coast. The very first inhabitants of Mauritius, the Dutch, settled here to colonize the island. The museum is surrounded by a lush tropical garden and includes a visitor center with an exhibition of artifacts found during archaeological excavations in the area since 1997, along with the remains of some ruins. These include building materials like stones, bricks, nails, military objects like musket balls, cannonballs, flint stones, and many other fascinating items.
- Pointe Canon - Pointe Canon is a captivating place to visit for a wonderful overview of the different sites surrounding Mahebourg. You’ll see the majestic Lion Mountain overlooking the sugar cane fields, Mouchoir Rouge islet facing the waterfront, and Ile aux Aigrettes further north, a small protected island located in the lagoon and also a nature reserve. Pointe Canon is where the locals gather for events such as regattas and the commemoration of the abolition of slavery celebrations in February. You’ll enjoy the panoramic view of the South East and the ocean.
