- Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple - The town has grown around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is constructed in the Dravidian architectural style.
Every traditional Hindu temple, including the Meenakshi Temple, opens at dawn with the custom of awakening the deities from their divine rest. This is done through classical music and an opening prayer to welcome the beautiful day. In the evening, during the final prayer, Lord Shiva, the husband of Goddess Meenakshi, is typically carried in a palanquin from his shrine and escorted to his residence, where Goddess Meenakshi awaits his arrival. This vibrant divine procession is accompanied by music and a gathering of devotees. Once Lord Shiva reaches his abode, they rest in a bed chamber made of pure silver.
This daily religious ritual in the early morning is traditionally called Thirupalli Ezhuchi, which means wake-up prayer or morning prayer, marking the opening ceremony. At night, it is referred to as the closing ceremony, bed chamber ceremony, or night ceremony.
