- Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple - The Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple was constructed by King Kulasekara Pandya between 1190 and 1216 CE. He developed the main sections of the three-storeyed gopura at the entrance of the Sundareswarar Shrine, as well as the central part of the Goddess Meenakshi Shrine, which are among the oldest surviving elements of the temple. Additionally, he established shrines (Koil) for Natarajar and Surya near the main temple, Ayyanar in the east, Vinayagar in the south, Kariamalperumal in the west, and Kali in the north. He also constructed a Mahamandapam. Kulasekara Pandya was a poet who composed a poem about Meenakshi titled Ambikai Malai. This gopuram is renowned for its frescoes and reliefs that illustrate both secular and religious themes of Hindu culture. Maravarman Sundara Pandyan II further enhanced the temple by adding a pillared corridor to the Sundareswara shrine and the Sundara Pandyan Mandapam. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site within the Shaivism tradition, dedicated to Meenakshi Devi and Shiva. However, Vishnu is also prominently featured in many narratives, sculptures, and rituals, as he is considered Meenakshi’s brother. The daily religious activities begin early in the morning with the Thirupalli Ezhuchi, a wake-up prayer and morning ceremony. The night concludes with the closing ceremony, known as the bed-chamber ceremony or night ceremony. The temple is typically open from 05:00 to 12:30 and from 16:00 to 20:30.

The center has evolved around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, constructed in the Dravidian style, with one shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and another to his consort, Meenakshi. This temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and ranks among the most significant active temples in India. Each traditional Hindu temple, like the Meenakshi Temple, opens at dawn, following the custom of awakening the deities from their spiritual rest with classical music and a morning prayer to herald the glorious day.
