- Segobriga Archaeological Park - Roman city of Segobriga. This archaeological site is one of the most important and best preserved Roman remains in Spain. The Roman city of Segobriga was the commercial and economic center of the mining of Lapis Specularis. Lapis Specularis is a variety of gypsum that forms sheets of glass and was used as the first window panes in history. The Lapis Specularis became highly demanded by the richest families in the empire, and economic growth allowed the monumentalization of the city. There were only seven Roman cities in Hispania with a Theatre, Amphitheater and Circus, and Segóbriga was one of them. The city’s economy collapsed when the technique of making sheet glass was developed and demand for the Lapis Specularis ceased.

We departed from Plaza de Conde Casal (Madrid) at 8:30 AM, along with our guide. Our first point of interest is Segóbriga, which is renowned as a key Roman city within Spain’s interior, noteworthy for preserving key elements such as the forum, baths, theater, and amphitheater.
Our journey next proceeds to the Lapis Specularis mines, a significant attraction. The Romans mined this resource, primarily for window glass. Exported across the empire as a luxury item, it brought considerable wealth to the mining region.
Next, we stop in Cuenca for lunch, with some leisure time on hand.
We conclude the tour with a guided presentation of Villa Romana de Noheda’s mosaics. The villa is home to one of the vast and intriguing story-telling mosaics of the Roman Empire, covering approximately 300 square meters.
Finally, we head back to Madrid, expecting to reach by 7:30 PM.
